The role of Patient & Family Concierge within UPMC Shadyside's Emergency Department is a pivotal position centered around providing compassionate, multidisciplinary support to patients, families, and hospital visitors. This full-time role, based on 36 hours a week schedule including evening/night shifts and rotating weekends, focuses on ensuring a seamless and positive experience during patients' hospital stays. The Concierge acts as a central point of contact, offering assistance in various capacities to enhance patient satisfaction and overall hospital service quality.

Responsibilities for the Patient & Family Concierge include greeting and providing directions to patients and visitors, managing patient belongings, aiding with environmental services like cleaning and supply management, and assisting with dietary and transport services within the hospital. The Concierge role further involves handling telehealth cart setups, supply and equipment logistics, and serving as a liaison for hospital policies and procedures. This role requires exceptional communication skills, the ability to multitask effectively, and a strong compassionate approach to patient care. The Patient & Family Concierge must adhere strictly to privacy regulations and maintain professionalism while delivering friendly, accurate assistance.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or active high school/GED program enrollment or one year of previous job experience required in lieu of HS diploma/GED
  • Previous experience in healthcare or customer service is a plus but not required
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Desire, drive, and compassion needed to provide an exceptional patient and family experience at all times

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or active high school/GED program enrollment
  • One year of previous job experience in lieu of a high school diploma/GED
  • Previous experience in healthcare or customer service is a plus
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Compassionate and driven to provide exceptional patient and family experience

Job Duties

  • Greets patients and families warmly and provides direction and escort assistance to ensure arrival at appropriate destinations
  • Disseminates patient information to visitors while respecting confidentiality
  • Serves as a reference source for visiting hours, general directions, package delivery, hospital policies
  • Issues courtesy parking discounts and free passes
  • Assists with parking cashier functions and validates patient parking
  • Establishes tracking of patient belongings upon admission
  • Cleans and organizes assigned patient and public areas following established procedures
  • Replenishes supplies and changes bed linens in patient rooms
  • Assembles and serves meals per diet orders, menus, and patient requirements
  • Maintains food safety and quality by applying HACCP principles
  • Delivers and sets up patient meal trays ensuring proper patient identification
  • Transports patients and patient-specific equipment safely and timely within the hospital
  • Performs inspections and disinfection of transportation equipment
  • Retrieves and sets up telehealth carts for patient appointments
  • Orders, organizes, and stocks unit-specific supplies and equipment
  • Answers unit phones and responds to call lights
  • Interacts with patients assessing needs and assists with patient mobility
  • Adheres to hand hygiene and infection control procedures
  • Follows mandatory reporting procedures for incidents affecting patient care
  • Exhibits UPMC values and practices experience key behaviors
  • Performs other duties as assigned
