Job Description

Smack Dab is a unique and vibrant queer-woman bruncheonette located on the far north side in Rogers Park, Chicago, near Evanston. Known for its Life-Changing Breakfast Sandwiches, handmade donuts, genuine service, and deep involvement in the community, Smack Dab has carved out a special place in the local culinary scene. This establishment prides itself on creating a warm, welcoming environment for its diverse clientele, with a focus on quality food and exceptional customer experience. The restaurant is recognized not only for its popular brunch offerings but also for its commitment to inclusivity and community engagement.

The role of Line Cook at Smack Dab is vital to maintaining the high standards and efficiency that the restaurant is known for. This position is perfect for a focused, skilled cook who thrives in a fast-paced, busy brunch environment, handling 200 plus tickets on weekends with accuracy and speed. The ideal candidate not only has the technical ability to manage grill and egg cookery with confidence but also possesses strong knife skills and is fluent in standard cooking techniques and bulk production. They are expected to seamlessly integrate into an established system while also contributing fresh ideas and innovations to keep the menu exciting and the kitchen running smoothly.

Working as a Line Cook at Smack Dab is more than just a job; it is an opportunity to join a team that values professionalism, efficiency, and an unwavering dedication to high-quality food preparation. The position demands mental acuity, the ability to prioritize tasks on the fly, and the capacity to stay calm under pressure, especially during the busiest weekend shifts. Knowledge of gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan diets is crucial, as the restaurant serves many customers with dietary restrictions and allergen concerns. The role requires weekend morning availability and several weekday shifts, with potential for additional production hours in the late afternoon or evening.

Compensation for this role starts at $22-24 per hour, based on experience, with merit-based raises available within 90 days. Smack Dab offers competitive benefits including paid time off (PTO), sick pay, 401(k) matching, health insurance, and disability coverage. The restaurant highly prefers local candidates who can reliably commit to the schedule and embody the team’s dedicated work ethic.

This is not an entry-level position. Applicants are expected to have prior experience in similar roles, with no current consideration for those new to the field or returning after a long break. Smack Dab’s environment is relaxed for customers but professional and results-driven behind the scenes, requiring cooks who are both self-directed and critical thinkers. Expo experience or a baking background is a plus but not mandatory. The priority is hiring a talented cook who can contribute to the ongoing success of the restaurant and maintain its reputation for excellence in a fun and inclusive workplace.
