The Kitchen Stewarts/Dishwashers position at UPMC Passavant is a vital role that ensures the smooth operation of the hospital’s food service department through rigorous cleanliness and sanitation standards. This role is tasked with maintaining exceptional housekeeping and sanitation practices in production, service, dining, and storage areas. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that all areas are kept in an inspection-ready condition in line with Health Department guidelines. This position requires a strong commitment to safety, hygiene, and teamwork to contribute to a clean and safe food environment within the hospital.

In addition to cleaning and sanitizing kitchenware, pots, pans, and utensils, the role includes duties related to trash removal, floor and wall cleaning, and adherence to recycling and chemical safety protocols. The role also extends into light food preparation, assisting in serving food and beverages, delivering meals to patients’ rooms when necessary, and ensuring proper table settings before each meal service. Furthermore, the Kitchen Steward/Dishwasher supports the food service team by monitoring equipment temperatures, maintaining large kitchen equipment, and following HACCP procedures to guarantee food safety throughout the kitchen operation. This position is ideal for individuals who are detail-oriented, reliable, and possess a strong work ethic to uphold the hospital's standards of cleanliness and service excellence.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Prior experience in a similar role preferred
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations
  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Good communication skills
  • Physical ability to meet the demands of the job, including standing for long periods and lifting heavy equipment

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Previous experience in kitchen sanitation or dishwashing preferred
  • Basic understanding of food safety and sanitation guidelines
  • Ability to follow instructions and work in a team environment
  • Good organizational skills
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks efficiently
  • Physical stamina to stand for long periods and lift heavy items

Job Duties

  • Clean and sanitize pots, pans, utensils, and other minor kitchen equipment following established procedures
  • Collect and remove trash from all operation areas following established procedures
  • Adhere to recycling guidelines
  • Clean and maintain floors and walls in designated food service areas following established procedures
  • Clean and sanitize dishes and related service ware following established procedures
  • Adhere to SDS information for proper and safe chemical use in the workplace
  • Assist in light food preparation as directed by manager or chef on duty
  • Assist in serving food and beverages to residents in the dining room
  • Deliver meals to residents’ apartments when requested
  • Clean large equipment as assigned following established procedures
  • Monitor and record temperatures according to operation guidelines
  • Maintain inspection-readiness at all times and follow HACCP procedures
  • Use and maintain equipment according to manufacturer and department guidelines while following all safety procedures
  • Complete table settings with water, butter, and crackers prior to each meal
