The Fresh Foods Department Manager at Harris Teeter is a key leadership role responsible for managing and supervising up to 80 associates within the department. This role requires a strong ability to oversee various functions including baking, frying, cake decorating, chef duties, and clerical responsibilities related to fresh foods. The manager is accountable for the overall direction, coordination, and performance evaluation of the department, aligning its goals with company policies and standards. Duties also include interviewing, training, planning, and directing associate work while managing performance including rewarding and disciplining team members. The manager is expected to address associate complaints, resolve problems, and maintain a positive work environment to foster productivity and customer satisfaction.

Being flexible and capable of managing multiple tasks in a fast-paced, sometimes distracting environment is essential. The ability to demonstrate patience and professionalism when interacting with both associates and customers is critical for success. Technical skills including knowledge of Harris Teeter’s Internet software, email, inventory systems, spreadsheets, and word processing software are also required to carry out daily operations effectively.
Educationally, the position requires a high school diploma or GED, combined with one to three years of related experience or equivalent training. The role demands essential skills in mathematics, reasoning, and English language competency to communicate clearly both written and verbally. Additionally, the manager must complete company-specific training, including new hire orientation, customer service, safety protocols, food safety, and department management. As the job involves physical tasks, candidates should be able to stand, walk, reach, lift up to 75 pounds regularly and occasionally up to 100 pounds. The work environment includes exposure to wet conditions, moving machinery, and occasional exposure to fumes or extreme cold. The noise level is typically moderate.
