The role of the Bus Operator at Pace is pivotal in ensuring that passengers reach their destinations safely and on time along predetermined routes. The position involves not just the operation of the bus but also requires excellent interpersonal skills to assist passengers with route and fare information. Beyond driving, Bus Operators are tasked with monitoring the farebox to ensure the collection of correct fares, issuing and collecting transfers, and reporting any mechanical defects through daily defect cards. Communication with dispatchers about route changes or passenger needs is essential, requiring the operator to be vigilant and responsive. Bus Operators are responsible for maintaining accurate records including farebox readings and special passenger counts, completing worksheets, and accident or incident reports when necessary. This is a safety-sensitive role and demands a reliable, safety-conscious individual capable of working long hours, split shifts, and weekends. Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • valid class B Illinois Commercial Driver’s License
  • minimum 5 years of safe driving experience
  • successful completion of training and route familiarization program
  • excellent communication skills
  • ability to work long hours, split shifts, and weekends

Job Qualifications

  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • able to obtain a valid class B Illinois Commercial Driver's License
  • good work history with a record of safe driving for 5 years
  • successful completion of training and route familiarization program
  • excellent oral and written communication skills
  • able to work long hours, split shifts, and weekends

Job Duties

  • Transport passengers safely along predetermined routes
  • assist passengers with fare and route information
  • monitor farebox to ensure correct fare deposits
  • dispense and collect transfers
  • file daily defect cards noting mechanical and body defects
  • report route detours and passenger assistance needs to dispatch via radio
  • record farebox readings and special passenger counts
  • maintain daily work sheets
  • complete accident and incident reports
  • perform other duties as assigned
