Job Description
Food Lion is a well-established supermarket chain that has been serving communities across the Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic United States since 1957. With a robust workforce of approximately 82,000 associates, Food Lion is dedicated to providing a fresh, easy, and affordable shopping experience to millions of customers weekly. The company operates in 10 states, maintaining a strong presence with stores like the one located at 1941 S Church Street in Smithfield, Virginia. Food Lion is known not only for its quality products but also for its commitment to excellent customer service and community involvement. It’s a dynamic retail environment where teamwork, respect, and customer satisfaction are paramount.
The Deli/Bakery Lead role at Food Lion is a pivotal position focused on overseeing and managing the deli service operations. This includes areas such as the olive bar, full-service HMS (honey maple sausage), wet salads, grab n go options, panini station, and bulk meat and cheese departments. The Lead is responsible for ensuring these areas run smoothly and efficiently while supporting the overall goals of the department related to financial targets and sales performance. A core part of the role involves building and maintaining strong relationships with both customers and fellow associates, fostering a workplace culture that aligns with Food Lion's company values and strategic objectives.
This position requires a proactive leader who can lead by example in delivering outstanding customer service, manage department operations effectively, and contribute to a positive shopping experience for customers. The role demands a hands-on approach to handling orders, maintaining product quality and variety, enforcing food and workplace safety standards, and merchandising products to maximize sales. The Deli/Bakery Lead also plays a key role in training and developing team members, supervising day-to-day activities, and ensuring compliance with all company policies and food safety regulations.
Reporting to the Deli/Bakery Manager, the Lead must demonstrate strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across departments and store management teams. Flexibility is crucial as the role includes working a rotational shift outside the assigned area on a weekly basis. The Lead uses several company tools and systems to monitor financial reports, scheduling, productivity, ordering, and inventory management, ensuring efficient and cost-effective department operations.
This role offers the opportunity to grow within a large retail organization, develop leadership skills, and contribute to the success of a trusted supermarket brand. Food Lion promotes an inclusive and respectful work environment, emphasizing fairness, dignity, and respect at all levels of the organization. Associates in this role will be part of a team-oriented culture that values continuous learning and adaptability in a fast-paced retail setting. While deli or food service experience is helpful, it is not required, making this an accessible position for individuals eager to develop their career in retail operations and food service management.
