This job opening is located at the Food Lion store in Norfolk, Virginia, specifically at 1235 N Military Hwy within the Deli Bakery HMS Department. The role is designed as a leadership position responsible for supporting store operations with a focus on driving financial performance, managing daily activities, and creating a positive shopping environment. The position entails managing labor, coaching associates, and upholding the company’s brand strategy and cultural values. This role also includes handling duties related to store expenses, inventory management, compliance with safety regulations, and maintaining department standards such as sanitation and food safety. Candidates should expect to lead by example through exceptional customer service and foster a motivating and productive store environment.

As a leader within the Deli Bakery HMS Department, the successful candidate will act as the key support in the absence of the Deli Manager, overseeing associate performance and daily department operations. This involves scheduling staff to ensure peak service levels, utilizing company tools like financial reports and inventory systems to optimize productivity and minimize losses, and maintaining strict adherence to local, state, and federal regulations. The position requires a hands-on approach to managing inventory, merchandising, and ensuring all promotional materials are properly leveraged to increase sales. Moreover, the role emphasizes maintaining safety standards by addressing unsafe conditions promptly and ensuring all operations meet food safety professional accreditation requirements. The candidate must also be capable of meeting the physical demands of the job, which includes lifting, standing, and working in varying temperature conditions. Effective communication and a willingness to learn are critical traits in order to successfully manage team members and promote an outstanding customer experience.

Job Requirements

  • Ability to use computers and other communication systems required to perform job functions
  • Ability to push or pull up to 2000 pounds using a pallet jack
  • Bend and lift products weighing up to 15 lbs continuously, 25 lbs frequently, and 50 lbs on occasion
  • Pull or push up to 75 lbs on occasion
  • Stand 100% of the time with frequent walking short distances
  • Be able to handle a variety of substances associated with cleaning and packaging materials, and household cleaners
  • Perform repetitive hand and arm motions
  • Frequent reaching and grasping at waist level and occasionally above shoulder or below waist level
  • Meet established volume activity standards for the position
  • Tolerate working in extreme hot or cold temperatures for up to 20 minutes at a time
  • Have sufficient visual ability to checks, invoices and other written documents

Job Qualifications

  • A high school graduate or equivalent preferred
  • Ability to lead and manage a team
  • Strong understanding of store operations and merchandising techniques preferred
  • Effective communication, customer service, and selling skills
  • Ability and willingness to learn multiple tasks and technical requirements of the job
  • Ability to use technical information to solve problems
  • Must meet minimum age requirements to perform specific job function
  • Must be accredited by the National Registry of Food Safety Professionals or similar accrediting organization as a Certified Food Safety Manager or willing to obtain accreditation within the first 90 days of employment and maintain it while employed in the position

Job Duties

  • Manage the Deli Bakery HMS Department in the absence of the Deli Manager, including supervising the performance of all duties and responsibilities of Deli Bakery HMS Associates
  • Daily management of labor and the coaching of associates to achieve productivity expectation
  • Provide leadership and motivation within the store to promote a culture reflective of our Brand Strategy and Culture
  • Support the achievement of budgeted financial and operating results
  • Smile and maintain an atmosphere of enthusiastic customer awareness with primary emphasis on fast, easy, flexible and friendly customer service
  • Role model outstanding, friendly customer service and use skills and knowledge of department products to offer solutions that meet or exceed customers' expectations
  • Control store's expenses through proper ordering, care for supplies and equipment
