Established in 1968, Berkeley Rep has cultivated a reputation for presenting ambitious, relevant, and excellent theatrical productions. The theatre is celebrated for its adventurous audience and commitment to diverse artistic voices, themes, and perspectives. Over the years, Berkeley Rep has staged more than 500 productions, including 85 world premieres, drawing over 6 million patrons to its performances. The theatre has garnered numerous prestigious awards including 8 Tony Awards, 9 Obie Awards, 11 Drama Desk Awards, a Grammy Award, and a Pulitzer Prize. Its national prominence was further cemented when it received the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre in 1997.
As a part of its annual programming, Berkeley Rep offers a seven-play main season complemented by up to four special event presentations, creating an eclectic range of theatrical experiences designed to engage and inspire diverse audiences. The theatre is committed to fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for both artists and patrons, emphasizing accessibility and cultural relevance in its operations.
The Front of House Staff role within Berkeley Rep’s Marketing and Audience Services department is essential in delivering exceptional patron experiences. This part-time, overhire, non-exempt position reports to the Front of House Manager and involves show-dependent scheduling, primarily from Tuesday to Sunday, including evenings and holidays. The position offers competitive compensation at $23.50 per hour.
Front of House staff members are key ambassadors of Berkeley Rep’s mission, tasked with creating a welcoming, safe, and memorable environment for theatre attendees. Their responsibilities include ticket scanning, assisting patrons with accessibility accommodations such as Assisted Listening Devices (ALDs) and Closed Captioning, and providing friendly, informed customer service. The role emphasizes Radical Welcome—an ethos centered on inclusivity, hospitality, and respect—ensuring that every guest, regardless of background, feels valued and supported throughout their theatre experience.
This position requires individuals who are emotionally intelligent, observant, outgoing, and proactive. They must exhibit strong situational awareness and the ability to respond effectively to dynamic event environments. Front of House staff collaborate closely with multiple departments to ensure smooth event operations, enforcing patron conduct policies and safety procedures, and addressing guest needs promptly and professionally. Participation in ongoing training on topics such as harassment prevention, bystander intervention, and equity, diversity, inclusion, and access initiatives is a vital part of the role.
