Job Description
Berkeley Repertory Theatre (Berkeley Rep) is a renowned nonprofit theatre company that has evolved from its humble beginnings as a storefront stage in 1968 to becoming an international leader in innovative and groundbreaking theatre. Recognized for its commitment to artistic excellence, adventurous programming, and cultural relevance, Berkeley Rep is known for fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment for both emerging and established artists. Over the decades, Berkeley Rep has connected with over six million patrons through more than 500 productions, including 85 world premieres. The theatre has earned distinguished national accolades, such as eight Tony Awards, nine Obie Awards, eleven Drama Desk Awards, a Grammy Award, and a Pulitzer Prize. In 1997, it received the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre, cementing its place on the national stage. Offering an eclectic seven-play season alongside up to four special event presentations annually, Berkeley Rep provides audiences with an enriching theatrical experience by showcasing diverse artistic voices, themes, and perspectives.
The Front of House Concessions position within the Marketing and Audience Services department at Berkeley Rep plays an essential role in delivering exceptional hospitality and customer service to a diverse range of theatre patrons. Reporting to the Front of House Manager, this part-time, non-exempt, overhire role involves working show-specific shifts predominantly from Tuesday to Sunday, which includes evenings and holidays. The position offers competitive compensation at $23.50 per hour.
In this vital role on Berkeley Rep's audience services team, Front of House Concessions staff are responsible for providing an elevated level of hospitality by engaging warmly with guests, answering questions, and efficiently handling concession orders. The team fosters a culture of Radical Welcome and inclusivity, ensuring all patrons feel valued and comfortable while maintaining accuracy, safety, and efficiency when serving food and beverages. Staff are expected to work on-site and adhere to all food handling, sanitation, and health regulations, while maintaining high standards of cleanliness and organized concession service areas.
Ideal candidates will possess emotional intelligence, observation skills, and an outgoing personality that thrives in a fast-paced environment. While bartending experience and knowledge of food service standards are advantageous, Berkeley Rep provides comprehensive training for its team members. The position demands flexibility, teamwork, and an unwavering commitment to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion. Staff also play an integral part in upholding AEDIA (antiracism, equity, diversity, inclusion, and access) initiatives by participating actively in workshops and ongoing professional development. This role offers an exciting opportunity to be part of a vibrant community dedicated to artistic innovation, exceptional service, and a welcoming atmosphere for all guests.
