In the role of Cashier, the individual will be the frontline representative and first point of contact for customers completing their purchases. The Cashier is responsible not only for scanning and processing transactions quickly and accurately but also for providing friendly and courteous service that encourages repeat business and enhances the store's reputation. Key responsibilities include greeting customers warmly, efficiently handling check-outs while ensuring accuracy with pricing and departmental categorization, and bagging purchases or providing assistance with carrying groceries for customers who need it. The cashier must manage register area cleanliness and maintain orderly procedures such as logging in and out of the cash register following established protocols.

Additionally, the Cashier supports the store's overall customer service goals by becoming familiar with store policies and proactively assisting customers with product inquiries or special orders. This requires a willingness to escalate unresolved issues to management and contribute to a welcoming shopping environment by informing customers about promotions and upcoming events. Beyond the front-end duties, the role involves basic stock handling tasks such as restocking displays, rotating inventory to ensure product freshness, labeling items properly, and assisting with inventory counts and backstock organization. Department maintenance duties include keeping shelves, coolers, and bins clean and orderly, managing trash removal and floor care, and ensuring proper operation and safety of departmental equipment.

This position demands physical stamina, including the ability to stand for long periods and continuously lift moderate weights. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous cashier or retail experience preferred
  • Strong communication skills

  • Ability to operate cash registers and point of sale systems

  • Availability to work flexible hours including evenings weekends and holidays

Job Duties

  • Greet customers smiling and making eye contact
  • Check out customer purchases quickly and accurately using correct prices and departments
  • Call for back-up as needed so that customers wait as little as possible to be checked out
  • Bag customer purchases as needed and ask customers if they need assistance
  • Carry out groceries or call for staff help if available
  • Log in and out of registers following established procedures
  • Put flyers in bags and inform customers of specials and upcoming store events
  • Maintain register area in clean and orderly condition
  • Become familiar with store policies and take initiative to help customers with product questions
  • Refer unresolved questions or problems to Manager on Duty or other appropriate staff
  • Provide assistance with special orders
  • Provide prompt friendly and courteous customer service while waiting on customers and responding to phone calls
  • Report customer suggestions comments and complaints to appropriate management
  • When processing deliveries set aside special orders match products with special order forms and notify customers
  • Offer suggestions for purchases and ways to prepare products in a friendly courteous manner
  • Stock displays fully without overcrowding and face items on shelves
  • Rotate older stock to front making space for new stock
  • Pull short-date or low-quality items and follow established procedures for recording and disposing of them
  • Label items accurately with price tags or signs and report price discrepancies to POS staff or department buyers
  • Take inventories of department stock for buyers as requested and notify buyers or POS staff of out-of-stocks
  • Maintain stocking lists for later shifts
  • Check for backstock when stocking
  • Keep shelves coolers bins and backstock in clean orderly condition
  • Dust and clean shelves and product when stocking
  • Remove trash promptly sweep and mop floor
  • Keep department equipment in assigned area and in working order
  • Use equipment safely and advise MOD of equipment problems
  • Record department shrink promptly and accurately
  • Participate in periodic inventory counts
  • Attend general staff meetings and storewide meetings
  • Perform other tasks assigned by Front-end and Assistant Front-end Manager
  • Answer and route phone calls take and route messages as needed
  • Alert Manager on Duty to potential shoplifters disorderly customers or other emergencies
