Job Description
The Federal Way Community Center is a vital hub in the city of Federal Way, providing diverse recreational, cultural, and community services to residents. Managed by the city government, the center serves as a welcoming place for individuals of all ages to engage in programs, access resources, and connect with others in a vibrant and inclusive environment. The center strives to support the well-being and enrichment of the community through a wide array of activities and services ranging from fitness and educational classes to special events and social gatherings.
This employment opportunity is a temporary, part-time position offering 15 to 20 hours per week, primarily during evenings and weekends. There are no benefits associated with this role, making it an ideal fit for individuals seeking flexible work hours or supplemental income. The position reports directly to the Member Services Supervisor and plays a crucial role in ensuring smooth daily operations at the Federal Way Community Center.
The primary function of this role is to perform various customer service, clerical, and typing duties that require above-average skill and attention to detail. Employees in this position act as the frontline representatives to the public, offering assistance, information, and support to visitors and patrons of the center. Responsibilities include answering telephone inquiries, assisting individuals attending programs, managing registrations for recreational and cultural services, and handling monetary transactions such as selling memberships and guest passes. Accuracy and efficiency are paramount when posting records, compiling data, making arithmetic calculations, and processing applications and forms.
In addition to serving community members, this role demands collaboration with other city departments, outside agencies, and various organizations. Employees will manage communications by handling incoming mail, taking messages, and referring calls or visitors to appropriate personnel. Competence in operating standard office equipment like computers, typewriters, shredders, fax machines, calculators, and copiers is necessary to carry out clerical tasks successfully.
Excellence in customer service and communication is critical to this position. Successful candidates must demonstrate tact, patience, and courtesy in applying policies and interacting diplomatically with the public and colleagues. Proficiency in English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary is essential for preparing accurate correspondence, reports, and other written materials. Additional duties include proofreading, editing, maintaining stock of office supplies, and supporting supervisory and departmental staff as needed.
Given the dynamic nature of the Federal Way Community Center, employees must be adaptable and able to perform clerical duties efficiently in a fast-paced environment. This requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide quickly and accurately, as well as follow oral and written instructions thoroughly. Physical ability to perform the job's essential functions is also necessary, along with a demonstrated capacity to engage effectively with diverse populations to achieve common goals.
Those interested in applying for this position must submit a resume and cover letter through the official Federal Way government employment website. Background checks will be conducted in accordance with RCW 43.43.832 to ensure the suitability of candidates for working in this community service capacity. This role presents a valuable opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the local community while gaining experience in customer service and clerical administration within a supportive municipal setting.
