Job Description
The University of Minnesota, Twin Cities (UMTC) is among the largest public research universities in the United States, renowned for its comprehensive undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs. Situated in the vibrant and diverse Minneapolis and St. Paul metropolitan area, UMTC offers students a wide range of opportunities for study and research. The university benefits from its extensive partnerships with internationally recognized health centers, corporations, government agencies, and arts and nonprofit organizations, fostering a rich educational environment. UMTC has gained accolades for its outstanding company culture, being recognized by Forbes as a Best Employer for Company Culture in 2026, Best Employer for Women in 2023, and Best Employer by State from 2022 to 2026. In 2026, the university also earned awards for culture excellence and industry leadership in employee appreciation and work-life balance.
The Urban Research and Outreach-Engagement Center (UROC) is an integral part of UMTC’s Office of the Vice Provost of Public Engagement. Located at 2001 Plymouth Avenue North in Minneapolis, UROC is dedicated to building lasting partnerships with urban communities based on mutual respect and benefit. The center focuses on community-based and community-defined research aimed at improving the vitality and well-being of urban neighborhoods, particularly the Northside and other Twin Cities communities. UROC's staff, programs, and affiliates work collaboratively to engage with diverse populations including communities of color and immigrant groups.
The position of Principal Office and Administrative Specialist at UROC is an hourly, part-time role designed to support the center’s mission through frontline reception and administrative assistance. Typically working less than 14 hours per week, the role's primary schedule includes evenings from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Mondays and Tuesdays, with weekend hours on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The incumbent will act as the face of UROC, greeting visitors and callers, providing information about UROC activities, assisting with resource navigation, and maintaining a welcoming and organized facility.
This multifaceted role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment. Key responsibilities include serving as receptionist for approximately 60 percent of the working time, offering clerical support for about 20 percent of the time, managing calendar and scheduling duties at 10 percent, and providing document processing assistance for the remaining 10 percent. The role also demands collaborative work with the UROC leadership team and support for events and community engagement efforts. The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, and to communicate clearly and professionally, is essential.
Applicants should possess at least a high school diploma or GED and have one year of experience in customer service, coupled with keyboarding and data entry skills. Experience managing schedules and using electronic calendars is a must, alongside demonstrated professionalism in public interactions. Preferred qualifications include background working with community organizations and higher education settings, experience in urban community engagement, and a collaborative approach to working with diverse populations. Excellent oral and written communication skills, multitasking capabilities, and a commitment to accuracy and detail will ensure success in this position.
As part of the University of Minnesota, this role supports an inclusive workplace that embraces diversity and provides equal employment opportunities regardless of race, gender, age, disability, or other protected statuses. A background check is required for the successful candidate, but past convictions do not automatically disqualify applicants. This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute meaningfully to community engagement in the Twin Cities while gaining valuable experience in an academic public service environment.
