Job Description

FedEx Freight, Inc. is a prominent leader in the freight transportation industry known for providing reliable and efficient freight services across various regions. As part of the global FedEx family, this division specializes in less-than-truckload (LTL) freight shipments, catering to a diverse clientele that includes businesses of all sizes. FedEx Freight is committed to delivering high-quality service with a strong emphasis on safety, operational excellence, and customer satisfaction. They employ a wide range of professionals, from drivers and warehouse personnel to administrative staff, ensuring that freight moves smoothly from origin to destination. The company fosters an inclusive work environment and is recognized as an Equal Opportunity Employer, fully supporting diversity including disabled and veteran applicants. They are open to accommodating applicants who require assistance with the application process, reflecting their commitment to accessibility and equity in employment.

The role in focus is a Freight Handler position at FedEx Freight, offering an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to engage in physical and operational duties related to freight movement in a dock environment. This position is classified as in-person work with a fixed shift from 4:30 am to 10:00 am, and a starting pay rate of $21.16 per hour, making it an attractive option for those seeking an early shift schedule with competitive compensation. The job centers on transporting freight across the dock areas to and from trailers, using both motorized and manual handling equipment. The Freight Handler is responsible for utilizing forklifts, pallet jacks, and hand trucks to position freight appropriately for shipment or receipt. Attention to detail is crucial in this role, as it requires verifying that shipping documentation matches the freight description, including checks for freight type, weight, and any hazardous material designations, ensuring compliance with all regulations and company procedures.

This role also involves securing freight efficiently inside trailers to prevent damage during transit by employing various tools such as pallets, straps, and ropes. Freight handlers may also be tasked with recouping or repairing damaged freight when necessary, showcasing the role's responsibility for maintaining shipment integrity. Documentation and reporting duties are essential, requiring the employee to complete records accurately reflecting freight handling activities and any anomalies encountered. Customer service is another aspect of the role, providing assistance related to freight and associated documentation inquiries.

The position may also include hostling or yard mule duties, which entail moving trailers within the yard, highlighting the need for operational flexibility and familiarity with forklift or similar equipment operation. This job requires adherence to all applicable laws and company policies, emphasizing safety and compliance at all times. Ideal candidates will have previous experience in warehousing, freight handling, or forklift operations, although this is preferred rather than mandatory. Physical stamina and the ability to handle demanding manual labor are critical, as the role involves lifting and moving hand freight of varying weights several times per week, manipulating heavy dock plates and trailer doors multiple times daily, and requiring frequent bending, twisting, squatting, pushing, and pulling throughout the work shift.

Working conditions for this position involve exposure to dock environments where weather can vary, and ambient conditions may include exhaust fumes, dust, noise, and other typical dock hazards. The work is fast-paced and deadline-oriented, requiring personnel to maintain focus and efficiency while coordinating closely with service center staff. This role is well-suited for individuals who can work independently or as part of a team and possess basic math and communication skills. FedEx Freight offers this role with a commitment to fair employment practices, competitive wages, and a structured shift pattern to support work-life balance for employees. The Freight Handler position represents a foundational role within FedEx Freight’s operations, contributing directly to the company's mission to provide dependable freight transportation services.
