Job Description

The University of Oklahoma is a renowned higher education institution committed to providing exceptional educational experiences and fostering a diverse and inclusive community. Located in Norman, Oklahoma, the university serves thousands of students, faculty, and staff, creating a vibrant campus life supported by various administrative and service departments. Among these, the Food Services department plays a vital role in ensuring quality food preparation and service in a safe and timely manner, supporting daily campus operations and special events that enhance the overall university experience.

This position is a critical part of the Food Services team, tasked with preparing food by following established recipes and portion control standards. The role is centered on the proper and safe measurement, weighing, and combining of ingredients to prepare simple menu items in large quantities. Employees in this position work with a variety of kitchen utensils, appliances, and industrial equipment such as ovens, knives, peelers, dicers, slicers, mixers, industrial dish machines, recycling systems, and stoves, demonstrating both skill and adherence to safety protocols.

In addition to food preparation, this role involves serving food courteously and respectfully, maintaining proper portion control and detailed knowledge of menu offerings. The employee will be responsible for loading, carrying, and transporting hot or cold food items or containers to customers, serving lines, or dining tables in a safe, efficient, and timely manner. The position also entails the transportation of food carts to and from designated floor units within the campus facilities.

Sanitization and cleanliness are essential to the role; therefore, the employee will wash, sanitize, and store pots, pans, and kitchen utensils properly. They will also scrape dishes, clean tables and serving areas, and maintain clean counters and floors. Proper kitchen standards must be followed meticulously when cleaning and sanitizing work areas, which include floors, food carts, cabinets, tables, kitchen utensils and equipment, dishes, and tableware.

This position also supports the university's special events, which may range from presidential luncheons and dinners to catering for student organizational events, and other day-to-day special requests. Flexibility and willingness to assist other food services staff members voluntarily as the need arises are highly valued qualities for candidates in this role.

Because this position is classified as essential, employees may be required to work during campus closures or inclement weather, including home football game days—which are significant events in Norman’s university culture. Employees typically receive a free meal for shifts of five hours, and uniforms are provided at no cost, though upkeep of the uniform is the employee’s responsibility.

Compliance with health and safety standards is mandatory for this role. Proof of Hepatitis A vaccination is required upon hiring to ensure the safety of all food handling and preparation processes. Additionally, obtaining and maintaining a Cleveland County Food Handlers card within 30 days of hire—and renewing it every two years—is a requirement to perform food service duties on campus.

The position offers a competitive target salary beginning at 13 dollars per hour, depending on experience, and is eligible for a range of employee benefits. The role offers an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in food services within an educational institution, combining practical kitchen experience with the chance to contribute to a dynamic community environment. The work schedule varies and requires a degree of flexibility to accommodate special campus occasions and essential service needs. This is a service and maintenance work type position located in Norman, Oklahoma, and is critical to supporting the daily operations and special events at the University of Oklahoma.
