Job Description

The New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) is a prestigious regional public, pre-professional arts training center located in New Orleans, Louisiana. NOCCA offers students intensive and specialized instruction in a variety of artistic disciplines, including culinary arts, dance, media arts such as filmmaking and audio production, music in classical and jazz styles as well as vocal performance, theatre arts encompassing drama, musical theatre, and theatre design, visual arts, and creative writing. The Food Specialist role at NOCCA is integral to supporting the wellbeing and daily needs of the student population. This part-time position is responsible for managing the entire food service operation related to student meals, including breakfast and lunch. The salary range for this role is $2,272.00 to $4,089.00 monthly, reflecting the importance of the role within the organization.

In this role, the Food Specialist oversees meal forecasting, ordering, pickup, and setup in coordination with the Food Service Provider, ensuring that all meals served meet reimbursement standards. The position requires functional supervision of three classified staff members specifically assigned to managing meal pickup, setup, and documentation, as well as oversight of staff and volunteers who assist during meal service. The Food Specialist is also responsible for maintaining inventory for meal services and healthy snacks, ensuring proper stock levels and replenishment.

Compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including the Department of Education's Child Nutrition Program and Department of Health and Hospitals sanitation requirements, is a critical responsibility. This includes maintaining accurate documentation of meals planned and served, inventory records, as well as food and equipment temperature logs. The Food Specialist works diligently to promote a safe and sanitary environment, protecting student health in accordance with Louisiana Health Department and National School Lunch Program standards.

Additional responsibilities include managing the Point of Sale (POS) system, collecting and depositing funds as needed, and attending required agency training to stay current with compliance and best practices. The position also involves occasional duties outside of direct food service, such as assisting with information technology, records management, and culinary program support.

This position follows a probationary or promotional appointment type and operates on a part-time schedule of 32 hours per week, Monday through Friday, from 7:30 am to 2:30 pm. NOCCA observes holidays typically recognized by schools, including additional breaks for Mardi Gras, Thanksgiving, and Winter Break encompassing Christmas and New Year's Eve.

Job Requirements

  • Two years of food service experience in a food service operation
  • OR Two years of training in food technology, food service management, or in a food service-related curriculum in a trade school or technical institute
  • OR Twenty-four semester hours in food and nutrition, dietetics, food service preparation, home economics, or hotel, food service, restaurant, or institutional management
  • Ability to work 32 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to 2:30 pm
  • Compliance with sanitation and safety regulations
  • Ability to maintain accurate documentation
  • Effective supervision skills
  • Willingness to attend required agency training

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Oversight of all aspects of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts student meal program
  • Forecasts the number of meals to be served daily and places orders with Food Service Provider
  • picks up and sets up meals for service at scheduled times and ensures that meals served are reimbursable
  • Ensures the account operation of the Point of Sale account system (POS), and when necessary, collects money generated from meals served and prepares a daily deposit of funds collected
  • Maintains inventory of stock for meal services and Healthy Snacks, and prepares orders for replenishing stock
  • Maintains integrity and accountability through compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations including Dept. of Education's Child Nutrition Program and Dept. of Health and Hospitals Sanitation requirements
  • Responsible for the accountability of recorded documentation for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations that reflect an accurate report of planned meals, meals served, and supply inventory
  • Provides an environment conducive to protecting the health, safety, and well-being of the school's students through high levels of sanitation standards as dictated by the Louisiana Health Department and NSLP
  • Maintain required documentation on food temperatures and equipment temperatures
  • Attends all required agency training
  • Performs other duties as assigned and outside of food service for students such as assisting IT, records management, culinary program
