The Food Services Shift Supervisor position at Ventura County Medical Center is a crucial supervisory role responsible for the effective day-to-day operations of the food service floor. Reporting to higher-level managers, the supervisor oversees the work of Cooks and Food Services Assistants, ensuring that all delegated tasks are completed efficiently and meet institutional standards. This role combines hands-on food preparation and service duties with supervisory responsibilities, including planning, scheduling, coordinating food service activities, and maintaining proper sanitation protocols. The position requires a proactive leader who can guide and support staff, ensure compliance with food safety standards, and manage resources such as food and supply ordering.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of two years of experience in institutional food service
  • Supervisory or lead experience preferred

  • Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods
  • Must pass a background check
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English
  • Bilingual skills are a plus but not required

Job Duties

  • Assists in planning, scheduling, and coordinating food preparation, cooking, serving, and storage activities
  • Provides guidance, support, and direction to lower-level staff by assigning tasks, establishing expectations, and monitoring their progress
  • Inspects food during and after preparation
  • Ensures that tools and equipment are used correctly and properly
  • Assures the highest standards of sanitation in all food preparation and service activities
  • Conducts on-the-job training and may be responsible for securing the kitchen facilities daily
  • Assists with Food Services Assistant duties as needed
  • Orders food and supplies
  • operates and maintains point-of-sale and order-on-demand systems
  • Writes and updates financial reports using appropriate software applications
  • Trains staff on completing compliance training with the use of a computer
  • Writes preliminary drafts of employee evaluations
  • Assists in the development and revision of policies and procedures
  • Assists in the recruitment process for food services workers
  • May travel to obtain orders from local vendors
  • Performs other related duties as required
