Job Description
Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) is a well-established educational organization dedicated to providing high-quality education and supportive services to its diverse student population. Located in Tucson, Arizona, the district manages a broad portfolio of schools and support services that prioritize student success, well-being, and community engagement. TUSD is committed to fostering an inclusive and nondiscriminatory environment that values diversity across disability, race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, and national origin. The district continually seeks passionate individuals who are dedicated to contributing positively to the education and welfare of students and the community at large.
The position offered is for a Food Service Supervisor within the district’s Food Services department. This role involves assisting the Food Service Site Supervisor in managing and coordinating the operations of one or more large food service production or service units. Candidates will be responsible for ensuring that food is prepared and served efficiently, maintaining high standards of quality and safety that align with school nutrition guidelines. This supervisory position is classified as a professional role and offers full-time employment with an 8-hour daily work schedule on a 10-month calendar, effectively aligning with the school year. Significantly, this role benefits from increased salary rates that are guaranteed through community-approved funding until June 2031, making this an attractive and stable career opportunity.
The Food Service Supervisor plays a crucial role in the delivery of nutritious meals to students and staff, enhancing their health and learning potential. The position demands adaptability as hours may fluctuate throughout the year depending on customer participation volume across various school sites. There are currently three positions available, including one at Cholla High School and two floating positions that support multiple locations. Employees in positions working fewer than 30 hours per week are not eligible for district benefits. This supervisory role requires dedication to both operational effectiveness and fostering a collaborative team environment among food service staff.
Successful candidates will have either an associate’s degree in institutional or restaurant management, completion of a Food Service-related certification program accompanied by relevant food production experience, or substantial institutional or restaurant management experience, including food service production and relevant coursework in personnel management, marketing, or customer service. Effective verbal and written communication skills in English are essential for following detailed instructions and collaborating effectively with team members and other stakeholders.
In addition to educational and experience requirements, newly hired Food Service Supervisors must complete several prerequisites before starting, including a comprehensive FBI fingerprint background check to ensure safety and security within the school environment. They must provide proof of immunity or immunization to measles and German measles for public health compliance, complete a Health Department Food Service Operator’s Certificate within three months of hire, and pass a pre-employment physical exam that includes a 50-pound lift test, reinforcing the physical demands of the job.
Working within the Tucson Unified School District’s Food Services department offers a meaningful career path where professionals contribute directly to the health and education ecosystem. This role provides candidates with the opportunity to grow professionally within a district recognized for its commitment to equity, community involvement, and high standards of student service. Applicants are encouraged to apply promptly to be considered for these available supervisory roles and to benefit from competitive salary rates and rewarding work conditions.
