This specific job opportunity is for a part-time Food Service Worker/Cashier position located at Shriners Children's Hospital in Galveston, TX. The role offers a rotating schedule with hours from 6:00 am to 6:30 pm, Monday through Sunday, providing flexibility for candidates who require part-time employment. The Food Service Worker/Cashier plays a vital role in supporting the hospital's nutrition services by performing cashier duties and general food service tasks. This includes preparation work such as washing, peeling, and cutting fruits and vegetables, as well as ensuring that all food handling and sanitation procedures are strictly adhered to. Employees in this role are responsible for maintaining cleanliness, managing food supplies, and delivering food in accordance with established safety standards and portion control guidelines. As a cashier, this position requires handling sales transactions accurately, including making change and managing cash receipts with accountability. Equally important is the role’s customer service component, where friendly and efficient interaction with patients, visitors, and staff contributes to a positive dining experience. Food Service Workers must also be able to resolve complaints professionally and communicate effectively with supervisors and team members.

Job Requirements

  • Prior hands-on food service experience is required
  • Ability to work part-time shift schedule including mornings and evenings
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods
  • Basic cash handling experience
  • Ability to follow sanitation and safety procedures
  • Must be able to perform physical tasks such as carrying food trays and equipment
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers and team members

Job Duties

  • Perform prep work such as washing, peeling, cutting and seeding fruits and vegetables
  • Weigh and measure designated ingredients
  • Carry pans, kettles and trays of food according to safety standards
  • Distribute supplies, utensils and portable equipment
  • Store foods according to wrapping, dating, and rotation procedures
  • Clean work areas, equipment and utensils
  • Ensure compliance with sanitation and safety requirements
  • Use approved recipes and portion control standards
  • Serve customers in a friendly and efficient manner
  • Resolve customer complaints in a service-oriented manner
  • Relay relevant information to supervisor
  • Perform sales transactions accurately
  • Enter sales into cash register and handle cash receipts
  • Make change and accept declining balance cards and other payments
  • Issue receipts and follow procedures for cash refunds
  • Manage assigned cash drawer ensuring compliance with overage/shortage standards
  • Replenish condiments, beverages and supplies
  • Maintain cleanliness of service area
  • Perform other duties as assigned
