The role of Food Service Worker/Cashier at the University of Houston is an integral part of the campus dining team. This position involves a combination of cashiering duties and general food service work to ensure the smooth operation of dining facilities. Individuals in this role will engage in food preparation tasks such as washing, peeling, cutting, and seeding fruits and vegetables, weighing and measuring ingredients, and adhering to strict sanitation and food safety standards. The position requires carrying food items safely within the kitchen and service areas, distributing supplies, and maintaining cleanliness of workstations and utensils.

Customer service is a core element of this role, where the Food Service Worker/Cashier will serve customers in a friendly and efficient manner, handle sales transactions accurately, and resolve any customer complaints with a service-oriented approach. The role requires flexibility with open availability, including weekend and night shifts, adapting to varying schedules to meet the needs of the campus community. Job Requirements

  • prior customer service experience preferred
  • open availability with willingness to work weekends and some nights
  • ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting and carrying food pans

  • ability to operate a cash register and handle cash transactions
  • legal authorization to work in the United States

Job Duties

  • performs prep work such as washing, peeling, cutting and seeding fruits and vegetables
  • weighs and measures designated ingredients
  • carries pans, kettles and trays of food to and from work stations, stove and refrigerator in accordance with safety standards
  • distributes supplies, utensils and portable equipment
  • stores foods in designated areas in accordance with wrapping, dating, and food safety and rotation procedures
  • cleans work areas, equipment and utensils
  • ensures compliance with sanitation and safety requirements
  • uses approved food recipes and production standards to ensure proper quality, serving temperatures and standard portion control
  • serves customers in a friendly, efficient manner following outlined steps of service
  • interacts with customers and resolves customer complaints in a friendly, service-oriented manner
  • relays relevant information to supervisor
  • performs sales transactions
  • enters sales into the cash register to ensure purchases are accurately recorded
  • makes change, accepts declining balance cards and other acceptable forms of payment
  • issues receipts to customers
  • follows standard procedures for issuing cash refunds
  • responsible for all assigned change funds and cash receipts, ensuring that cash drawer is in compliance with overage/shortage standards
  • replenishes condiments, beverages and general supplies while maintaining service area cleanliness
  • performs other duties as assigned
