Job Description
UCLA Health is a renowned healthcare organization dedicated to providing exceptional medical services and patient care across multiple locations. Known for its commitment to innovation, quality, and community engagement, UCLA Health operates a variety of specialized departments, including the Department of Nutrition, which focuses on delivering nutritious and delicious food options to patients, staff, and visitors. The organization values teamwork, continuous learning, and a supportive work environment to ensure all employees are empowered to deliver the highest standards of service and care. This particular role is a per diem position within the Department of Nutrition, offering flexibility with schedules and working hours that vary depending on operational needs. Employees represented by the AFSCME Union will receive a minimum wage of $25 per hour effective June 22, 2025. This position may also convert to career status, providing long-term employment opportunities for those who demonstrate commitment and capability.
In this role, the successful candidate will become an integral member of the retail food service team, contributing to the smooth and efficient daily operations. Responsibilities include setting up service lines to ensure timely and attractive presentation of food items, pre-plating and serving food with attention to quality and customer satisfaction, and aiding in the preparation of meals. The role also involves merchandising food products and maintaining the beverage station to create a welcoming and well-stocked environment for customers. Additionally, the staff member will act as a food runner, ensuring that food reaches customers promptly and in good condition. A critical part of the job involves measuring temperatures of hot and cold items to guarantee food safety and compliance with health regulations. The role also requires washing dishes, pans, utensils, and small equipment to maintain cleanliness and operational efficiency.
This position demands physical stamina, including the ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds, as well as stand, bend, walk, and reach for prolonged periods, often in varying temperature conditions such as hot kitchen environments or cooler storage areas. Flexibility is essential as the role requires the ability to float across different locations during the training period, allowing for comprehensive experience and integration into UCLA Health's diverse operations.
UCLA Health is committed to fostering a safe working environment, adhering to prescribed safety, sanitation, and food handling practices in compliance with HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) and JC (Joint Commission) policies. Strong interpersonal skills are vital to exceeding customer expectations and upholding the department's mission to provide outstanding retail food service. Employees in this role will have the opportunity to develop knowledge of retail operations including station setup, replenishment, merchandising, inventory procedures, portion control, and serving techniques. Basic nutrition production skills will be leveraged and enhanced through hands-on experience and training.
Overall, this position is well suited for individuals seeking a dynamic and rewarding role within a prestigious health system. The per diem nature offers flexibility, while also allowing for transition to career status. Candidates passionate about food service, committed to high standards of safety and quality, and eager to contribute to a collaborative team environment will find this opportunity fulfilling and impactful.
