The Food Service Worker role at Swedish Hospital in Chicago, IL, offers both part-time and full-time positions with multiple shifts available, including weekends and holidays. The hourly compensation is $17 per hour, with additional shift and weekend pay where applicable. This position is integral to hospital and long-term care food service operations, fulfilling specialized duties related to patient diet orders and meal preparation. The Food Service Worker acts as a liaison between the patient, Food and Nutrition Services, and Nursing Services to ensure accurate meal delivery and excellent service quality.
This role entails assisting the manager with food and meal preparation, maintaining cash receipts and meal records, and helping complete daily reports. Maintaining high standards of food quality, kitchen sanitation, and safety practices are essential components of the job. Responsibilities include preparing quality food and baked goods according to planned menus, ensuring proper food storage, serving meals timely and in accordance with dietary guidelines, and using kitchen equipment safely and effectively. Attention to detail in garnishing food and maintaining clean workspaces supports patient satisfaction and health standards.
Beyond practical food preparation, the Food Service Worker is also responsible for significant cleaning tasks, including major refrigerator and kitchen equipment maintenance, garbage collection, and floor cleaning to ensure sanitary conditions. Compliance with all food safety regulations, uniform policies, and daily collaboration with management to uphold menu accuracy and food temperature standards are critical for the role. - Food Service Certificate as needed
- sufficient education or training to read, write, and follow verbal and written instructions
- be able to work quickly and concisely under pressure
Job Duties
- Prepare quality food and baked goods according to a planned menu
- prepare a daily report that verifies transactions
- understand what is inclusive of a meal
- ensure storage of food in an accurate and sanitary manner
- serve food according to meal schedules, department policies and procedures
- use and care of kitchen equipment, especially knives
- timely preparation of a variety of food items, beverages, and
- add garnishments to ensure customer happiness and eye appeal
- coordinate and assist in major cleaning of refrigerators, freezers, and cooking and serving equipment
- adhere to all food safety regulations for sanitation, food handling, and storage
- adhere to the uniform policy
- connect with the manager daily to understand and accurately prepare menu for the day
- supervise the food temperature requirements
- maintain a clean and organized work and storage area
- scrub and polish counters, clean and sanitize steam tables, and other equipment
- follow established procedures and standards for cleanliness, to ensure a balanced and safe environment
- maintain garbage collection site and kitchen floor areas in a neat and sanitary fashion
- perform other duties as assigned including other areas in the kitchen
