The Food Service Worker position at Swedish Hospital in Chicago, IL, offers both part-time and full-time employment opportunities with multiple shifts available, including weekends and holidays. The hourly compensation is set at $17.05, with additional shift and weekend pay where applicable. This role is vital in maintaining the efficient and high-quality operation of the hospital’s food services, particularly in patient kitchen and retail settings. The Food Service Worker collaborates closely with the manager, assisting with meal preparation, managing cash receipts and meal records, and helping complete daily reports. Key responsibilities include preparing quality food items and baked goods according to planned menus, serving food according to established schedules and departmental policies, and ensuring food storage is handled accurately and hygienically. The Food Service Worker also actively participates in cleaning duties, including major cleaning of refrigerators, freezers, counters, and kitchen equipment, ensuring compliance with food safety regulations and uniform policies. A critical component of this job is acting as a liaison between patients, the Food and Nutrition Services Department, and Nursing Services, interpreting and executing patient diet orders appropriately. The position demands physical vigor, involving lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, and extended periods of standing or walking, and requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • prior experience in a food service or kitchen environment preferred

Job Duties

  • Prepare quality food and baked goods according to a planned menu
  • prepare a daily report that verifies transactions
  • understand what is inclusive of a meal
  • ensure storage of food in an accurate and sanitary manner
  • serve food according to meal schedules, department policies and procedures
  • use and care of kitchen equipment, especially knives
  • timely preparation of a variety of food items, beverages
  • add garnishments to ensure customer happiness and eye appeal
  • coordinate and assist in major cleaning of refrigerators, freezers, and cooking and serving equipment
  • adhere to all food safety regulations for sanitation, food handling, and storage
  • adhere to the uniform policy
  • connect with the manager daily to understand and accurately prepare menu for the day
  • supervise the food temperature requirements
  • maintain a clean and organized work and storage area
  • scrub and polish counters, clean and sanitize steam tables, and other equipment
  • follow established procedures and standards for cleanliness, including sweeping, mopping, ware washing
  • maintain garbage collection site and kitchen floor areas in a neat and sanitary fashion
  • perform other duties as assigned including other areas in the kitchen
  • comply with physical demands including lifting, bending, pushing, pulling and/or extended walking and standing
  • use of personal protective equipment as required
