Job Description

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Boston Healthcare System is a crucial part of the Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 1, dedicated to providing high-quality health care services to veterans. Established to support the health and well-being of those who have served in the U.S. military, the VA Boston Healthcare System operates numerous medical facilities, including the West Roxbury VA Medical Center, one of its key locations. This center offers a range of health services encompassing inpatient, outpatient, and long-term care for veterans across the Boston area. The VA Boston Healthcare System is committed to excellence in medical care, research, and education, maintaining a supportive environment for both veterans and employees alike.

The Food Service Worker position at the West Roxbury VA Medical Center is a part-time role involving 20 hours per week. This employment opportunity is made available through a standing register of eligible applicants, indicating ongoing openings until filled. Classified under the WG 2 pay grade, the hourly wage for this role ranges from $19.54 to $22.79. The work schedule is set from Thursday through Monday, 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm, with specific days off varying weekly. This position serves a vital role in supporting the Nutrition and Food Service department, ensuring that meal services operate smoothly and efficiently for the hospital’s patients and staff.

The role requires the Food Service Worker to manage essential food service tasks including preparing and serving food in a cafeteria-style setting, maintaining cleanliness of dining and kitchen areas, and assisting with food storage and delivery. The worker must be capable of performing a variety of duties such as setting up dining room tables, brewing coffee, preparing salads and sandwiches, and operating kitchen equipment. Physical demands are moderate to heavy, including standing for long periods and lifting objects weighing up to 20 pounds independently, with occasional assistance for heavier loads.

Safety and hygiene are paramount in this position, as the worker will manage food preparation areas that naturally expose them to heat, steam, and sharp utensils. Attention to following directions, reliability, and a strong aptitude for food service work are critical qualifications. Training or experience in similar roles enhances the candidate's capability to perform effectively, although a specific length of experience is not mandated. The VA values applicants who are committed to the agency’s mission and the integrity of serving veterans, fostering a respectful and professional work environment.

In addition to the baseline job duties, applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, undergo background checks, and meet specific employment conditions set forth by federal regulations. The application process is competitive and continuous, with regular cut-off dates for referral and evaluation of candidates. Moreover, the role is designated as non-supervisory, federal service type is competitive, and there is no requirement for relocation incentives or telework options.

This position embodies the spirit of public service and the importance of supporting those who have served our country. It offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute to the well-being of veterans while working within a structured federal employment system that provides a comprehensive benefits package tailored to part-time federal employees. Candidates who thrive in dynamic, service-oriented roles with an emphasis on teamwork, punctuality, and food safety will find this job both rewarding and impactful.
