The West Haven VA Medical Center offers a wide range of medical, surgical, and rehabilitative services to veterans, aiming to enhance their health and overall quality of life through comprehensive, compassionate, and veteran-centered care. The facility is known for its commitment to excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement in healthcare services tailored to veterans' needs.
This particular job opportunity is for a permanent, part-time Food Service Worker position located within the Nutrition and Food Service department of the West Haven VA Medical Center. The part-time position involves working 20 hours per week, with primary work hours from 3:30 PM to 7:30 PM and various tours as assigned. The hourly pay range for this position is between $21.99 and $25.67. This role supports the medical center's mission by ensuring that veterans receive properly prepared, nutritious meals that conform to prescribed dietary guidelines.
As a Food Service Worker at the West Haven VA Medical Center, you will play a vital role in the preparation and delivery of dietary services to patients. Your responsibilities will include setting up dining room tables, placing and replenishing food and beverages, conducting nourishment inventories using proper stock rotation methods such as first-in, first-out procedures, and verifying that meal trays align with the prescribed diets for each patient. Working closely with cooks, you will assist in food preparation tasks such as weighing, measuring, and assembling ingredients following standardized recipes while adhering to strict sanitation and food safety procedures. You will also be responsible for sterilizing equipment, sanitizing work areas, unloading food and tray delivery carts, and maintaining cleanliness and safety standards in your work environment.
The physical demands of this job require continuous standing and walking with frequent reaching, stooping, pushing, pulling, and bending. The work environment can be hot and humid due to steam and cooking equipment, and requires handling heavy items occasionally. Emphasis is placed on safety practices, including maintaining sanitation standards and handling hot working surfaces and sharp objects with care.
Candidates for this role must be U.S. citizens and suitable for federal employment, with the ability to pass a background check and selective service registration if applicable. The job offers numerous benefits typical of federal employment including health insurance, retirement plans, paid holidays, and life insurance.
The West Haven VA Medical Center is committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive work environment, encouraging applicants to demonstrate their skills fully and engage in meaningful work that contributes to the wellbeing of veterans. This standing register of eligible applicants is set to remain open until August 13, 2026, welcoming candidates who are ready to contribute their talents and join a team focused on providing nutritious and safe food services in support of veteran care.
