The Food Service Worker II role at Jersey City Medical Center, a key facility within RWJBarnabas Health, is a full-time, day-shift position offering a competitive hourly wage of $19.83. This role operates within the Dietary Management department, where the focus is on supporting the nutritional and dietary needs of patients through efficient food delivery and service functions. Reporting to a Department of Food and Nutrition Services Supervisor or Manager, the Food Service Worker II is responsible for delivering meals to patient care units, assisting patients when necessary, and maintaining cleanliness and proper functioning of work areas and equipment. The position demands excellence in customer service skills, teamwork, and the ability to work efficiently under stress. This role also requires knowledge of food preparation, touchscreen technology, and the ability to assist patients with meal selection, demonstrating a caring attitude toward the sick.

Beyond operational duties such as tray set-up, cash register operation, and general cleaning, the Food Service Worker II must ensure proper food storage, menu board setup, and adherence to departmental schedules. This includes reconciling cash accurately and maintaining sanitary conditions that comply with healthcare standards. The shift runs from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, with potential weekend work on an alternating basis to meet departmental needs.

Job Duties

  • Assists in tray set-up
  • collects, processes and disposes of trash accordingly
  • performs general cleaning duties as requested
  • delivers meals to patient care units
  • assists patients when possible
  • cleans food carriers upon return
  • prepares, stocks and transports food carriers
  • follows work assignments as established
  • keeps dining room tables straightened and clean
  • locks register when leaving the immediate area
  • operates the cash register accordingly
  • collects cash/guest meal tickets and makes change as needed
  • participates and maintains cleaning schedules
  • maintains cleanliness of work area, equipment and supplies
  • performs all other duties as assigned
  • reconciles cash accurately and fills out a reconciliation slip
  • responsible for all reconciliations with a $3.00 overage/shortage
  • scrapes, scours and rinses pots, pans, utensils and equipment
  • performs heavy cleaning duties
  • sets up menu board to reflect current menu
  • wipes off counters and tables, arranges and replenishes items as needed
  • refills and stocks condiments as necessary
