Job Description
The Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) is a prominent non-profit Tribal health organization dedicated to addressing the unique health needs of Alaska Native and American Indian people residing in Alaska. Established to serve over 171,000 individuals, ANTHC operates in partnership with the Tribal health organizations of the Alaska Tribal Health System, fostering a collaborative environment aimed at improving health outcomes in these communities. As Alaska’s largest and most comprehensive Tribal health organization, ANTHC stands out as a vital resource for indigenous populations and is the second-largest health employer in the state, employing more than 3,100 professionals.
ANTHC offers a robust array of services that include comprehensive medical care through the Alaska Native Medical Center, innovative wellness programs, crucial disease research and prevention initiatives, provider training geared toward rural health care professionals, and the development of rural water and sanitation infrastructure. Their vision is clear and aspirational: for Alaska Native people to become the healthiest population in the world.
This particular role as a Food Service Worker (FSW) within ANTHC’s Food and Nutrition Department is critical in supporting the organization’s mission by ensuring that patients and guests receive high-quality food service experiences. The position encompasses a variety of responsibilities including food preparation, service, and ensuring sanitation compliance. Working collaboratively in a team-oriented environment, FSWs are tasked with maintaining cleanliness, stocking supplies, assisting guests, and supporting other departmental functions across the health campus.
Food Service Workers at ANTHC may be assigned throughout various locations on the campus where food is involved—from storage and preparation areas to serving locations. The role involves assisting in setting up service areas, restocking food items, interacting positively with guests, managing cash register duties, and operating industrial kitchen equipment like dishwashers. In addition to these daily operational duties, FSWs help maintain hygiene standards by cleaning workspaces, counters, and dining areas, sweeping and mopping floors, and performing janitorial tasks to uphold safety and sanitation.
FSWs also play an important role in communication, reporting food quality and safety concerns, guest feedback, or equipment issues to supervisory personnel. They may also assist patients by answering meal-related inquiries and preparing patient trays, as well as delivering these trays and supplies to patient rooms or floors. The position demands flexibility in scheduling, often requiring workers to accommodate early mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as dictated by business needs.
ANTHC supports its food service team by providing training opportunities, both in classroom and virtual formats, and requiring compliance with all health, safety, and sanitation regulations including HACCP policies. The Food Service Worker role is structured into three levels with increasing responsibilities and leadership expectations: FSW I (entry-level), FSW II (intermediate with more complex tasks and mentoring duties), and FSW III (advanced level with supervisory responsibilities and departmental leadership).
The position requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent at minimum, with experience and educational requirements escalating at higher FSW levels. Certifications such as the Municipality of Anchorage General Food Service Worker’s Card and ServSafe certification from the National Restaurant Association are required or must be obtained within a year of hire depending on the role level. The Consortium prefers candidates with experience in institutional food service settings and may prioritize qualified Alaska Native and American Indian applicants in compliance with the Indian Self Determination Act.
ANTHC offers an attractive and competitive benefits package including comprehensive medical insurance via the Federal Employee Health Benefits Program, cost-share dental and vision plans, retirement contributions, paid time off starting immediately, and various insurance coverages fully paid by the employer. Additional benefits include tuition discounts, professional development opportunities, on-site childcare, employee assistance programs, gym access, and more, making this role not only impactful but supported in a highly employee-centric environment. If you are dedicated to making a difference in healthcare food services within a culturally respectful and community-focused organization, this opportunity at ANTHC presents a compelling career path.
