The Patient Services Worker role at Highland Park Hospital in Highland Park, IL, is a part-time position that plays a critical role in the smooth operation of the hospital’s Food and Nutrition Services Department. Patient Services Workers are responsible for the reception, interpretation, and follow-through of patient diet orders within hospital and long-term care settings. Duties include delivering and collecting patient trays and nourishment items during meal service, introducing patients to Food and Nutrition Services, obtaining patient food preferences when necessary, and communicating patient food needs to the Food and Nutrition Services Department.
In addition, Patient Services Workers maintain strict sanitation standards by following cleaning schedules and participating in other sanitation tasks as assigned. They are also tasked with inventory management, including restocking pantries and monitoring refrigerator and freezer temperatures to ensure food safety and compliance with health regulations. A thorough understanding of therapeutic diets and protocols is vital, alongside the ability to seek guidance from supervisors or dietitians when diet errors are observed. The role supports clinical staff by ensuring all patients’ basic nutrition care needs are met, highlighting the collaborative nature of this position within the healthcare team.
This position may involve physical demands such as lifting, bending, pushing, pulling, and extended periods of standing or walking. Job Duties
- Delivers and collects patient trays during meal service
- Delivers nourishments and/or snacks to patients as ordered by physician/dietitian in a timely manner
- Visits patients to introduce the services of the Food and Nutrition Services Department
- May obtain food preferences/dislikes from patients and/or family members
- Communicate all patient food needs to the appropriate area of the Food and Nutrition Services Department
- Ensures that nutrition diet care orders are provided to the patient by offering appropriate menu selections
- Maintains and adheres to all sanitation standards by following assigned cleaning schedules
- Completes other sanitation tasks as assigned by the Supervisor/Relief Supervisor
- Inventories and re-stocks pantries, refrigerator, and freezers on assigned unit(s)
- Maintains temperature logs for unit refrigerators and freezers
- Understands therapeutic diets using established protocols and seeks assistance from Supervisor or Dietitian if an error is observed
- Assists the clinical staff in ensuring all patients' basic nutrition care needs are met
