The Food Service Worker position within the Kings Canyon Unified School District plays a vital role in the operation of school cafeterias and is integral to the daily meal service provided to students, faculty, and guests. This position requires the preparation and serving of various food items including main dishes, vegetables, fruits, salads, sandwiches, desserts, and beverages. The role involves working under supervision in either a cafeteria, serving kitchen, or central kitchen setting to prepare and maintain food service areas in a clean, sanitary, and orderly manner. As a Food Service Worker, you will assist in baking, set up utensils and equipment for meal service, and engage in cleaning and maintenance tasks that support kitchen operations and safety standards.

This position typically operates during daytime hours, specifically from 6:30 AM to 2:30 PM, with a half-hour lunch break, spanning 193 workdays annually. Candidates with prior food service experience are preferred, underscoring the importance of familiarity with kitchen operations and food handling. Successful candidates must pass the district’s food service test to ensure they meet operational and safety standards required in the preparation and serving of food within the school environment.

This role also occasionally involves supervisory duties, particularly overseeing student helpers, managing equipment such as mixers, grinders, and dishwashers, and assisting with inventory management and monetary transactions. Physical demands include frequent standing and walking, bending, reaching, and occasionally lifting items up to 50 pounds, reflecting the active and hands-on nature of the job. Job Requirements

  • Valid California driver’s license
  • Prior food service experience preferred
  • Must pass Kings Canyon Unified School District food service test
  • Ability to stand and walk frequently
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to maintain good personal hygiene
  • Ability to follow safety and sanitation procedures
  • Ability to work 6:30 AM to 2:30 PM with half-hour lunch

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Assist in the preparation of main dishes, vegetables, salads, fruits, sandwiches, and beverages
  • Assist in baking breads, cookies, cakes, pastries, and other desserts
  • Set up utensils and equipment for lunches
  • Serve a wide variety of lunches and snacks to students, faculty and others
  • May assist with the collection of moneys received from the sale of school lunches, snacks and other food stuffs
  • Clean and store dishes, utensils, cafeteria equipment and food supplies
  • Clean work areas and dispose of refuse
  • May assist with wrapping, packing and loading of food for transport to satellite serving kitchen
  • May assist in taking inventory
  • May supervise student helpers
  • Operate mixer, grinder, dishwasher and other equipment common to large kitchens
  • Perform other duties as requested
