Job Description

The Food Service Department (DSS) is an integral part of the school district's internal operations, dedicated to providing nutritious and well-prepared meals to students and staff. This department plays a crucial role in supporting the overall health and well-being of the school community by ensuring that food service operations run smoothly, safely, and efficiently. As part of a classified, non-exempt position within the department, the role is designed for a committed individual who values teamwork and has a passion for food preparation and service. The Food Service Department takes pride in maintaining high standards of food safety and quality, adhering to established protocols such as Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP) to safeguard the health of all meal recipients.

This position is classified and non-exempt, with a salary starting at $15.15 per hour. It is a 9-month, full-time role following a work calendar of 191 days, with seven working hours per day. Candidates can expect a comprehensive benefits package that supports health, retirement, and well-being, demonstrating the district's commitment to its employees.

Reporting directly to the Food Service Manager and/or Food Service Director, the successful candidate will be instrumental in assisting with the preparation and serving of meals, as well as maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the assigned cafeteria areas. Responsibilities include assisting in food preparation, such as washing fruits and vegetables, preparing snack bars and salads, and supporting cooks with meal preparation. The role also involves setting up the serving line and serving food to students and staff, ensuring that meals are presented attractively and served in a timely manner.

Beyond food preparation and service, this position requires assisting with inventory management tasks like unloading and properly storing food commodities, and assisting with the ordering of food and supplies to ensure the kitchen remains well-stocked. The role includes maintaining cleanliness in food service and storage areas, adhering strictly to food safety and hygiene standards to prevent contamination and ensure compliance with health regulations.

Additional responsibilities might include taking food service deposits to the district office for processing, demonstrating the role's integration with the broader district administrative operations. This job requires the ability to follow oral and written instructions efficiently, maintain good working relationships with colleagues, and work under close supervision while demonstrating initiative and responsibility.

Physical demands for this position include frequent standing, walking, bending, and the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. The work environment is both indoors and outdoors, with exposure to moving kitchen equipment, cleaning solutions, and chemicals, necessitating awareness and adherence to safety protocols to prevent injury.

Applicants should possess a high school diploma or equivalent, with a year of food service experience preferred. The ability to obtain and maintain a food handler's certification and other relevant certificates is required, as well as holding a valid Fingerprint Clearance Card (IVP) at the time of hiring.
