The Food Service Worker position at Keck Medicine of USC is a pivotal role that ensures the efficient preparation and serving of food within various areas of the healthcare facility. This role offers an hourly rate ranging from $21.00 to $33.15, commensurate with experience and qualifications. It involves various duties such as reading and following recipes, estimating food quantities, using kitchen utensils for food preparation, assisting with hot and cold food prep, and proper food storage. The employee must ensure all food preparation areas and equipment adhere to sanitation standards, execute customer service tasks such as interacting with patients and unit personnel respectfully, and assist with meal tray delivery as needed.

Additional responsibilities include brewing coffee and tea, restocking beverage areas, tasting food products to ensure quality, and participating in all required safety training, including allergy and foodborne illness education. Attending training programs either in the classroom or virtually is essential to stay up to date with institutional policies and culinary standards.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience if no high school diploma, GED or equivalent, as a substitution of education
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service behavior
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing
  • Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) card obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date required within LA City only

Job Duties

  • Reads and follows recipes and/or product directions
  • Estimates food requirements based on recipe recommendations or direction
  • Operates a variety of kitchen utensils to weigh, measure, mix, wash, peel, cut, grind, stir, strain, season and knead foodstuffs for cooking, serving and storing
  • Assists in the preparation of hot and/or cold foods, and properly stores food, utilizing knowledge of temperature requirements and spoilage
  • Inspects workstations for compliance with service standards
  • Keeps records and requisition for supplies/equipment as needed
  • Cleans and sanitizes workstations and equipment following all Keck Medicine of USC, client and regulatory rules and procedures
  • Taste test products
  • Sets up stations with entrées, soups, salads, breads, condiments, other food products and appropriate utensils
  • Provides general stocking duties in service area
  • Serves and replenishes food from counters, steam tables and patient tray line
  • Breaks down stations at the end of meal periods
  • Brews coffee and tea
  • changes cartridges in Coke machine
  • May be required to restock other beverage areas
  • Interacts with customers in the serving, retail and dining areas
  • May interact with patients and unit personnel if assisting with meal tray delivery
  • Provides excellent customer service
  • Assists customers with opening containers and cutting food when requested
  • Attends all allergy and foodborne illness in-service training
  • Complies with all company safety and risk management policies and procedures
  • Reports all accidents and injuries in a timely manner
  • Participates in regular safety meetings, safety training and hazard assessments
  • Complies with all Keck Medicine of USC policies and procedures
  • Attends training programs (classroom and virtual) as designated
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
