It operates alongside The Class Act Restaurant and supports catering and banquet services for The Hotel at Kirkwood. This connected culinary team is renowned for offering fresh, high-quality ingredients and delivering menus that feature a gourmet twist with variety and flavor. The Café specifically caters to students, employees, and guests, emphasizing innovative yet accessible menu offerings that meet a diverse range of tastes and nutritional preferences.
This part-time Cook position at The Café is essential for advancing Kirkwood Community College’s mission, vision, and strategic initiatives through hands-on food preparation and kitchen operations. The role requires morning and/or lunch availability and involves supporting multiple functions within the Café's dynamic and fast-paced environment. Individuals in this position will have the opportunity to engage directly with the campus community while honing their culinary skills within a supportive team that values continual improvement, collaboration, service, perseverance, and leadership.
The Cook will prepare food items both to order and for anticipated demand, ensuring that all food handling and sanitation standards are strictly followed to maintain a safe and appealing food service environment. The position demands versatility, as candidates will deliver support to other culinary positions, including barista, cashier, and dish roles, depending on business needs. This flexibility requires a positive attitude and effective communication skills, nurturing a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere aligned with Kirkwood's core values.
Responsibilities also include maintaining cleanliness of kitchen and café areas, providing direction to prep cooks, and assisting in transportation of supplies and food items between various campus locations. Physical requirements of this job include standing for extended periods and routine movements such as squatting, bending, reaching, and lifting, vital for performing daily culinary tasks efficiently.

Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Commercial kitchen experience
- Ability to stand for 5-6 hours daily
- Ability to squat, reach and bend regularly
- Knowledge of food storage and handling techniques
- Ability to follow instructions and recipes
- Effective time management and organizational skills
- Ability to operate kitchen and dish equipment safely
Job Qualifications
- High school diploma or the equivalent required
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- Commercial kitchen experience
- Preference will be given to those candidates with a post high school degree
- Preference will be given to those candidates with more than two years commercial kitchen experience
Job Duties
- Prepare food production items for consumption, either on demand or based on anticipated business needs
- Inspect food preparation and serving areas to ensure observance of safe, sanitary food-handling practices
- Substitute for or assist other cooks and bakers as business needs demand
- Support other functions such as barista, cashier and dish as business needs demand
- Prepare, package and serve food items for sale and consumption at satellite locations
- Provide direction to prep cooks as needed
- Wash, peel, cut, and seed fruits and vegetables to prepare them for consumption
- Positively engage with customers and coworkers
- Regular and consistent attendance at work
- Leave Café and work areas clean and set for the following shift, including dishwashing as needed
- Perform other related work duties as assigned
- Transport supplies, food and equipment between various Café locations on campus
- Effective time management and organizational skills
- Ability to follow instructions (i.e. menus/recipes) as well as to cook and plan meals
- Must be able to stand 5-6 hours a day and to squat, reach & bend on a regular basis
- Must be knowledgeable of food storage/handling techniques
- Understand and demonstrate the proper and safe operation of all kitchen and dish equipment
