The Food Service Worker position at Lucia Mar Unified School District is a part-time role, offering employment during the school year over 191 days. Working Monday through Friday for six hours per day with times to be determined, this position plays a crucial role in supporting the district’s food service operations. The salary ranges from $20.20 to $25.78 per hour, prorated based on the start date and prior experience, reflecting the district's commitment to fair and competitive compensation. Under the direction of the Unit Leader, the Food Service Worker assumes responsibility in specific areas of the food service facility while performing general duties to support efficient meal preparation and service.

This role involves hands-on responsibilities such as preparing and portioning food, operating food service equipment, cashiering, maintaining records, and assisting with inventory and training substitute workers. Employees in this role must manage physical tasks such as lifting food containers and equipment, working in different environments including refrigerators and freezers, and standing for extended periods. The ability to stay calm under pressure, handle interruptions, and maintain accuracy and speed is essential. Employees must also exhibit good judgement, follow written and verbal instructions, and uphold sanitation and safety standards at all times.

The role requires a valid California driver's license and the ability to operate and maneuver district vehicles when necessary for tasks such as food delivery and pack-out. Bilingual communication skills, especially in Spanish, are considered desirable but not mandatory. Fundamental knowledge of quantity food preparation, nutrition, food safety regulations, and the care and use of cooking equipment is advantageous. Overall, this position is designed for someone who is dependable, cooperative, and capable of multitasking in a fast-paced school food service environment, all while contributing to the positive nutrition and wellness of students within the district.

Job Duties

  • Prepare food by slicing meat, baking breads, making desserts, portioning and packaging prepared food
  • Serve food during breakfast, lunch and snack periods
  • Perform general kitchen cleanup after each serving period
  • Operate food service equipment such as slicer, mixer, tilt skillet, fryer, convection oven, range, warmer, refrigerator, freezer, wrapping machines and others
  • Perform cashiering tasks including taking money and lunch cards, checking rosters, and compiling daily bank deposits
  • Maintain and compile various records such as production worksheets, student charges, and daily participation reports
  • Drive district vehicles for pack-out, delivery, and serving food to food service facilities
  • Direct co-workers in tasks and maintain food safety and sanitation standards
  • Assist with inventory management
  • Receive food and supplies and properly store them in walk-in refrigerators and freezers
  • Assist in training substitute food service workers
  • Maintain proper care of equipment
  • Assume duties of unit leader in their absence
  • Perform other related duties as required
