Job Description
The University of California, Berkeley, commonly known as UC Berkeley, is a prestigious world-leading public research university known for its academic excellence, diverse community, and strong commitment to equity and social justice. Founded in 1868, UC Berkeley is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where students, faculty, and staff from all walks of life can thrive professionally and personally. The university promotes openness, freedom, and a sense of belonging, ensuring all members feel supported and empowered to achieve their full potential. Beyond education, UC Berkeley is a center for innovation and has a significant global impact in intellectual, economic, and social spheres.
Within this renowned university, the Lawrence Hall of Science serves as a public science center located on the hills above the main campus. This center inspires and engages more than 100,000 visitors yearly through various science discovery and educational activities. The Lawrence Hall of Science also impacts hundreds of thousands more through community outreach across Northern California and beyond, offering programs that reach youth, educators, community leaders, and partners both locally and internationally. Significantly, The Lawrence Hall of Science houses the ottoy Initiative, a pioneering effort aimed at fostering understanding and respect for the Ohlone people and culture, and improving UC Berkeley's relationship with the Ohlone community.
The Food Service Worker role at the Lawrence Hall of Science is a unique opportunity to be part of the ottoy Initiative, contributing to multiple culinary experiences offered onsite and across the campus. These experiences are serviced by ammatka Kitchen, which operates in the renovated kitchen and cafe space at the Lawrence that had been closed since 2020. This role involves active participation in the preparation, cooking, serving, and presentation of diverse food offerings that reflect the cultural and social values the ottoy Initiative promotes. Under the guidance of ottoy Initiative leaders and the Culinary Manager, the position plays a vital part in delivering high-quality made-to-order and grab-and-go meals that connect food and culture.
This temporary, full-time position (40 hours per week) spans 5.5 months and is critical to maintaining operational excellence within a dynamic food service environment. The Food Service Worker will be engaged in multiple aspects of food service including food preparation, customer interaction, sanitation, equipment maintenance, and supporting sustainability efforts. The position values collaboration, cultural competence, inclusivity, and the ability to work effectively with diverse teams and communities. It is also instrumental in advancing the goals of the ottoy Initiative, appealing to applicants who share a passion for culinary arts as a medium to celebrate indigenous heritage and food sustainability.
This role requires a blend of culinary skills, customer service expertise, and a commitment to maintaining a clean and safe food production environment. Candidates with previous experience in food preparation, large-scale food service, and an interest in indigenous and sustainable food practices are particularly encouraged to apply. UC Berkeley offers a comprehensive benefits package and promotes career growth through professional development opportunities. The university is committed to equitable hiring practices and values diversity, reflection of community demographics, and cultural competency across its workforce.
