Job Description
The District of Columbia Government is a pivotal public sector employer dedicated to providing essential services to its residents, encompassing a diverse range of departments and roles that contribute to the community's well-being and infrastructure. As a decentralized government entity, it operates with the mission to enhance the quality of life for all individuals living and working within the District through effective governance, equitable service delivery, and community engagement. Among its many roles, the Food Service Worker position stands out as an essential component in maintaining the health and nourishment of those served by various governmental institutions such as hospitals, schools, and community centers. This role is entrenched within the collective bargaining unit, demonstrating a commitment to equitable labor practices, and involves adherence to stringent safety and operational standards, including a mandate for an agency service fee and a strong emphasis on residency preference for District residents and DC high school graduates, underscoring the government's investment in local employment and community stability.
The Food Service Worker role is comprehensive and dynamic, tasked with multiple food preparation and kitchen maintenance responsibilities that are vital for the smooth operation of food service in a controlled environment like a hospital or public institution. This permanent position requires a candidate who is proficient in a wide range of kitchen duties, including washing, sorting, counting, peeling, and dicing fruits and vegetables, preparing salad ingredients, counting and panning eggs, as well as handling cooked meat preparation such as pulling meat from bones and pans for next-day meals. The role further encompasses operational tasks such as opening canned food containers, placing vegetables in cooking vessels, greasing pans, and making and labeling bottles and juices. The Food Service Worker is expected to ensure cleanliness and sanitation by performing comprehensive cleaning duties including washing pots and pans, cleaning food carts, trash areas, floors, walls, and loading platforms, as well as assisting in inventory management and food storage. Beyond routine duties, the role demands active participation in ongoing training to maintain high standards of food service, safety, and sanitation. The position is designated as safety sensitive, requiring various background checks and drug and alcohol screenings to maintain a secure and compliant work environment. Shift work, including weekends and holidays, is mandatory to ensure continuous service delivery. The candidate must possess a ServSafe Certification at the time of application and have a high school diploma or equivalent, reinforcing the government's focus on professional standards and qualifications. Work is carried out in a controlled but sometimes moderately risky environment, demanding adherence to safety protocols. The Food Service Worker not only contributes to daily meal preparation but also supports special events and luncheons, making this role versatile and integral to the overall mission of public service in the District of Columbia Government.
