Job Description
The William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital is a premier healthcare facility dedicated to serving the nation’s veterans by providing exceptional medical services in a respectful and inclusive environment. Located in Madison, Wisconsin, this hospital operates under the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and is committed to delivering quality care and support to veterans through a variety of specialized programs and services. The institution is not only focused on health care but also on fostering a workplace that values diversity, promotes professional growth, and encourages teamwork across all levels of staff. As a federal employer, it offers a stable career with comprehensive benefits, competitive wages, and opportunities for professional development within its diverse operational structure.
This particular position is within the Food Service Operations department of the Nutrition and Food Services (NFS) team at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital. The role is designated as a Wage Grade 3 Food Service Worker, classified under pay scale WG 3, with a salary range of $21.19 to $24.73 per hour. The employment type is permanent, intermittent, with no relocation expenses reimbursed, and requires the work schedule to include shifts from 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM or 11:30 AM to 8:00 PM. The hospital emphasizes the importance of inclusiveness, equity, and maintaining a safe and hygienic work environment, particularly given the healthcare setting.
As a Food Service Worker at this wage grade, candidates will perform essential tasks involving multiple steps that require careful attention to detail and adherence to established operational procedures. The job entails preparation and handling of food items, including cold food preparation, sandwich making, patient-specific feedings such as liquid or supplemental nourishments, and distribution of meals to patients and nursing stations. The role also involves assisting or working independently on menu items that need little or no processing, following recipes and preparation instructions meticulously.
Additionally, the position requires maintaining cleanliness and sanitary conditions in the work area, including sweeping, mopping, washing shelves, tables, and equipment, and ensuring proper food storage standards are met. The worker must be physically capable of continuous standing and walking, lifting objects up to 40 pounds regularly, and occasionally handling heavier loads when covering certain areas such as the Ingredient Control Room or Warehouse. Since the role is located in a hospital kitchen environment, employees must be prepared to work in sometimes elevated temperature and humidity conditions and adhere strictly to food safety and personal hygiene protocols including the use of protective clothing and equipment.
The position does not require prior specific training or experience but does expect a demonstrated ability to perform duties efficiently, safely, and competently. Employees will also display professionalism, diplomacy, and teamwork when interacting with peers, staff, patients, and families. Training responsibilities may be assigned, requiring the worker to provide guidance to lower-graded employees. This job is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or those who owe allegiance to the United States, and applicants must be prepared to undergo background and suitability checks as part of the hiring process.
To apply, candidates must provide a complete application package including a resume and may include supporting documents such as cover letters, transcripts, or certifications if applicable. The application deadline is 11:59 PM EST on August 3, 2026. The hospital maintains a commitment to enhancing the efficiency of federal government operations and supporting the ideals of the American republic through this role in its Nutrition and Food Services team. Joining the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital offers a rewarding opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the health and well-being of veterans while forging a stable federal career with a broad range of benefits and professional support.
