Job Description
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is a federal government agency dedicated to providing comprehensive healthcare and support services to veterans and their families. The VA operates a wide network of medical centers, outpatient clinics, and other facilities across the country aimed at improving the health and well-being of those who have served in the armed forces. The GV Sonny Montgomery VA Medical Center located in Jackson, Mississippi, is one such facility committed to delivering high-quality healthcare services in a supportive and efficient environment. The VA is known for its strong commitment to public service, the principles of the American republic, and upholding the United States Constitution with integrity and respect for all individuals it serves.
This role of Food Service Worker (WG-2) at the GV Sonny Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson, MS, is a full-time, permanent position offering an hourly wage range of $18.23 to $21.27. This position is not supervisory, has no promotion potential, and works within the competitive service framework. The work schedule includes rotating shifts from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm or 11:00 am to 7:30 pm with alternating weekends and holidays, highlighting the importance of flexibility and dedication in serving the needs of veteran patients. The Food Service Worker plays a crucial role in ensuring that the food service operations run smoothly and hygienically to support the nutritional needs of patients and staff alike.
The primary responsibility involves performing a variety of tasks related to food preparation, distribution, and sanitation in the kitchen and dining areas of the medical center. This includes cleaning and sanitizing work surfaces, food service equipment like refrigerators, toasters, coffee machines, steam jacketed kettles, and tilt skillets using safe and appropriate sanitation techniques. The worker will also operate dishwashers, maintain equipment, and transport meal trays efficiently. The role demands attention to detail especially when identifying discrepancies related to dietary restrictions and allergies to ensure patient safety.
Physical demands for the position include working in the often warm and humid kitchen environment and performing physically intensive tasks such as lifting objects weighing up to 20 pounds unassisted, possibly more than 40 pounds with assistance, frequent standing, walking, stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. The ability to handle these physical requirements safely is critical to successfully fulfilling the duties of this role.
Candidates interested in this federal position must be U.S. citizens or nationals and meet standard federal employment suitability criteria. The hiring process follows direct-hire authority procedures, with a probationary period of one year to evaluate performance and fit with the agency's goals and standards. This position is ideal for individuals seeking a meaningful career that combines service to the veteran community with a structured work environment and the stability of government employment.
Overall, this Food Service Worker role is a vital part of the healthcare delivery system at the VA, contributing significantly to patient satisfaction and operational excellence by maintaining high levels of food safety and sanitation. Veterans Affairs offers a comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plans, paid leave, and opportunities for career development, representing a rewarding employment opportunity for those committed to public service and the well-being of veterans.
