Job Description
Hospitality House, located at 1002 N. Main Ave., Tucson, AZ, is a vital community-based organization dedicated to providing shelter and support services to individuals experiencing homelessness. As part of the Salvation Army's global mission, Hospitality House operates with a compassionate and inclusive approach, aiming to restore hope and dignity to those in need. The Salvation Army itself is an international movement and an evangelical arm of the universal Christian church, motivated by the love of God and driven by a mission to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. They are committed to meeting human needs without discrimination, making Hospitality House a trusted and respected establishment within the Tucson area.
This job opportunity is for a Kitchen Assistant/Food Service Worker position that is offered on a temporary basis, with a full-time schedule of 35 hours per week Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, as well as part-time options available during weekends with 15 hours scheduled on Saturday and Sunday from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm. The employment term extends through November 15, 2026.
The role of the Kitchen Assistant/Food Service Worker is essential to the daily operations of Hospitality House, ensuring that shelter clients receive timely, nutritious meals in a clean and safe environment. This position involves assisting with the preparation of simple meals, including sandwiches, snacks, and beverages. The Kitchen Assistant performs light cooking and food preparation tasks as directed, maintaining food safety and sanitation standards throughout all duties. Part of the role includes serving meals following established portion control guidelines, replenishing food items as needed, and assisting with meal setup and cleanup.
Moreover, the Kitchen Assistant operates commercial kitchen equipment, including dishwashers, and is responsible for maintaining kitchen and dining area cleanliness, which encompasses trash removal, table wiping, and mopping floors. This position also supports the management of donated food by sorting, inspecting, weighing, and properly storing items while monitoring expiration dates to ensure compliance with health guidelines. The assistant maintains the organization of storage areas such as walk-in coolers, freezers, and dry storage, which are critical for smooth kitchen operations.
Candidates for this position should demonstrate respect and sensitivity toward a diverse population, reflecting the inclusive values of Hospitality House and the Salvation Army. A criminal background check is mandatory to ensure the safety and security of the shelter environment.
This role requires physical stamina as it involves frequent walking, standing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting varying weights regularly. Specific vision abilities, including close and distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment, are necessary to perform the job safely and effectively.
Overall, this temporary full or part-time position offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute to a well-established nonprofit organization devoted to helping vulnerable populations. Joining the Hospitality House team means becoming part of a supportive community working tirelessly to provide essential services and improve lives through dedicated food service and shelter operations.
