Job Description
This position is offered by the United States Department of Defense (DoD), specifically through a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation which streamlines the recruitment and appointment process for qualified candidates to federal competitive service roles. The DoD is one of the largest government agencies, tasked with ensuring national security and military preparedness. This job opportunity takes place at the Walter Reed facility in Bethesda, Maryland, a notable and historic location that provides medical and support services to military members and their families. Employing a workforce dedicated to supporting the mission of the federal government, this role is essential in maintaining the operational efficiency of dining services within a highly active government environment.
The position is classified under the federal job series 7408, Food Service Worker, and is a permanent full-time role, with a pay scale of WG 4 and a salary range of $22.25 to $25.92 per hour. It does not have promotion potential and the role is not eligible for telework or relocation expenses. This job requires working within a physical kitchen environment, characterized by well-lit areas but also noisy conditions due to food service activities. The nature of the job includes exposure to heat, steam, humidity, and potential hazards such as slippery floors and sharp objects, requiring a candidate who is capable of working safely and efficiently under these conditions.
The Food Service Worker plays a critical role in the preparation and service of food within the federal setting, involving multiple culinary duties such as setting up cafeteria lines, serving meals, weighing and assembling food products according to standardized recipes, and maintaining cleanliness and organization of the work area. Additionally, the incumbent performs tasks such as inspecting the quality and freshness of food, preparing cold dishes for future use, and assisting with the operation of cash collection systems for customers. The role demands physical stamina due to prolonged standing, walking, and manual handling of items up to 40 pounds, as well as flexibility to work during irregular hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
This role requires a dependable candidate committed to upholding the values and mission of the United States government, with a focus on efficiency and public service. The employee will be subject to a background investigation and mandatory seasonal influenza vaccinations, unless exempted for medical or religious reasons. Moreover, the position is designated as Mission Essential, necessitating availability during emergencies or severe weather to support uninterrupted operations. The ideal candidate demonstrates the capacity to perform food service worker duties under normal supervision, with the ability to verify meal cards, operate beverage stations, prepare complex salads and sandwiches, receive and store supplies properly, and maintain sanitary working conditions. This government job offers comprehensive federal employee benefits, including health and dental insurance, retirement plans, and paid leave, contributing to a rewarding career serving the public.
