Job Description
Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD) is a specialized pediatric hospital dedicated to providing comprehensive healthcare services to children and their families. Located in Norfolk, Virginia, CHKD is recognized for its commitment to excellence in pediatric care, offering a wide range of medical services tailored specifically to the needs of young patients. The hospital is known for promoting a family-centered approach to health and wellness, combining expert medical care with a compassionate environment that supports the healing and comfort of children.
As a part of the hospital's Food & Nutrition Services department, the Food Service Worker plays a vital role in maintaining the daily operations of the kitchen, dining, and dish room areas. This part-time position requires working approximately 2-3 shifts per week with flexibility to cover rotating shifts including early morning (6AM-2PM), late morning to evening (11:30AM-7:30PM), weekends, and holidays. The role is essential to ensuring that all food service areas comply with CHKD’s policies, federal, state, and local regulations, and maintain a high standard of sanitation and safety.
The Food Service Worker is responsible for routine general service tasks such as setting up and breaking down food stations, replenishing supplies at condiment and beverage areas, operating dishwashing equipment, and maintaining cleanliness throughout the service areas. In addition to daily operations, this role supports special functions such as catering events and ensures proper waste management according to hospital safety standards and environmental regulations.
This position demands excellent time management, organizational skills, attention to detail, and a collaborative team spirit. Working at CHKD requires a high level of professionalism as the Food Service Worker interacts with staff, patients, families, and guests, always upholding a courteous and helpful demeanor. Additionally, the role requires compliance with Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) guidelines and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards to promote a safe and healthy work environment.
Candidates for this position must have completed city food handling training and be prepared for an increased security clearance process that includes FBI fingerprinting, criminal background checks, and Child Protective Services registry searches when assigned to the Children's Pavilion. Preferred qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent and prior food service experience, although these are not mandatory.
The working environment can be noisy and physically demanding, as it involves exposure to varying temperatures and potential minor hazards such as cuts or burns. Physical requirements include the ability to stand, walk, lift, and perform repeated movements essential to food service work.
Overall, this Food Service Worker position at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute to a renowned pediatric healthcare institution while gaining valuable experience in a healthcare food service setting. The role suits individuals who are proactive, dependable, and enthusiastic about supporting the health and comfort of pediatric patients through excellent food service and sanitation practices.
