Newton-Wellesley Hospital is currently seeking a Food Service Worker to join its food service team. This employment opportunity focuses on performing a wide range of duties involved with preparing and serving foods and beverages in one or more food service environments within the hospital setting. The Food Service Worker plays a vital role in supporting daily food service operations, maintaining food quality and safety standards, and assisting with the setup and maintenance of food preparation and serving areas. The role demands consistency in following safety procedures and sanitation standards to ensure patients, staff, and visitors receive high-quality meals in a timely and efficient manner.

The position requires an individual who is detail-oriented, reliable, and capable of working under detailed instructions to set up kitchen or salad areas, manage food temperatures, and prepare or assist with various food items including hot and cold dishes, sandwiches, salads, bakery items, and beverages. The Food Service Worker must ensure proper portion control and presentation while adhering to prescribed food handling protocols. Responsibilities also include replenishing supplies and equipment, conveying food from preparation to serving sites, and maintaining cleanliness of work areas and utensils.

Physical demands are a significant aspect of this role, requiring frequent standing, walking, balancing, and manipulation of kitchen tools, as well as occasional lifting of objects over 35 lbs with assistance. The worker must be able to use fine and gross motor skills and remain attentive to safety protocols and hygiene guidelines. This role does not involve patient care duties but supports the broader mission of Newton-Wellesley Hospital by ensuring smooth food service operations.

Applicants are encouraged to have prior food service experience of 2 to 3 years and hold a high school diploma or equivalent, though this is preferred rather than mandatory. Job Duties

  • Sets up food service, kitchen, or salad area facilities, equipment and utensils under detailed instruction
  • checks food temperatures and prepares areas for daily operations
  • operates cooking or bakery equipment as assigned
  • conveys food and supplies from the main kitchen, bakery, and/or salad preparation area to the serving site by carrying or motorized cart
  • follows prescribed procedures in setting up hot and cold food lines and machines
  • prepares or assists in preparation of hot and cold meat and vegetable dishes, beverages, salads, sandwiches, bakery items, salad dressings, and other food items
  • serves food items to customers ensuring appropriate portions and garnishes
  • replenishes foods, silverware, glassware, dishes, and trays at serving stations
  • attends to day-to-day problems concerning equipment and food supplies
  • detects and handles spoiled food or defective supplies
  • cleans and maintains work areas including floors, utensils, and equipment
  • collects and disposes of garbage and trash
