Job Description

The Department of Corrections, Division of Institutions, is currently seeking a dedicated Food Service Supervisor for the Anchorage Correctional Complex (ACC) located in Anchorage, Alaska. The Alaska Department of Corrections (DOC) is a pivotal state government agency committed to public safety through secure confinement, rehabilitation, and community reintegration of offenders. The DOC emphasizes professionalism, respects victims' rights, and strives to ensure the humane treatment of all residents within its facilities. Staff members work collectively to foster a safe environment conducive to daily reform and personal growth. The Anchorage Correctional Complex is a key facility within this framework, serving approximately 1,000 inmates and operating comprehensive food service functions critical to inmate health and welfare.

This full-time position entails overseeing all food service operations at ACC, managing the preparation and delivery of meals with a staunch commitment to safety, efficiency, and regulatory compliance. The Food Service Supervisor plays a vital role in budget management, menu planning, food production, and supervision of kitchen staff. Operating within a secure environment, the role demands adherence to sanitation, safety, and security protocols, ensuring the daily nutritional needs of inmates are met with precision. Additional responsibilities include training and scheduling staff, inventory management, and ordering supplies. The supervisory duties require effective leadership, coaching, and mentoring of subordinate personnel to enhance their skills and promote professional development. This position also ensures adjustments in production meet nutritional standards and operational requirements within the East and West Kitchen facilities.

The working environment includes a private office within a secured area, providing the Food Service Supervisor with dedicated space to oversee operations while maintaining direct access to kitchen activities. With a starting salary potentially approved up to $2,860.80 biweekly at Step D, the role offers remuneration competitive within state government parameters, along with a robust benefits package. Candidates should be prepared to work within a correctional facility, embracing the responsibilities of interacting with the resident inmate population under stringent institutional guidelines regarding security, employee conduct, and property protection.

Ideal candidates will demonstrate accountability by holding themselves and their team responsible for high-quality, timely, and cost-effective results. Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills are essential to manage complex operational challenges effectively. Flexibility is also key, as staff must adapt to changing conditions and unforeseen obstacles. Prior experience in custodial or residential institution food service management is highly desirable.

The Department of Corrections offers extensive benefits typically available to state employees, including health insurance covering medical, vision, and dental expenses with employer contributions, life insurance, optional insurance plans, retirement program membership, paid leave, and holidays. Employees also benefit from a supportive team environment, professional growth opportunities, and access to experienced DOC professionals. This role represents an excellent opportunity for a food service professional seeking to make a meaningful impact within a structured and mission-driven public safety agency.
