The position of Food Service Substitute Site Supervisor is a vital role within the Kalamazoo Public Schools food service team. This temporary substitute position is available at various satellite elementary school locations with the responsibility of overseeing the administration of school meal programs. The role comes with a competitive hourly wage of $18.84, reflecting the importance of the responsibilities it encompasses. The Substitute Site Supervisor will assist in supervising food service operations, including retherming and warming breakfast and lunch items, ensuring compliance with USDA regulations, Michigan Department of Education standards, district policies, and health department codes.
This role involves actively managing food preparation and supply orders according to standardized menus, maintaining a clean and safe kitchen environment, and supporting staff through training and supervision. The Substitute Site Supervisor will also handle important financial tasks such as collecting student meal payments, preparing bank deposits, and maintaining accurate account balances. Strong communication is required to report any personnel or procedural issues to the Director of Food Services and school administrators. The position demands excellent organizational, interpersonal, and leadership skills to promote student and staff satisfaction through proper meal presentation, portion control, and quick resolution of customer concerns.

Job Requirements
- Must have a High School Diploma or accredited equivalency
- must have the ability to read, write, follow verbal and written instructions and perform a variety of mathematical functions
- computer knowledge is desirable
- must have strong knowledge of safety and sanitation related to food service operations
- must have a minimum of two years experience in school food service
- must complete required state-wide training classes within two years
- must be certified as the Person in Charge according to health department codes
- must be able to work under pressure and tolerate physical demands including standing, bending, squatting, reaching and lifting
- must have sufficient mobility to complete tasks timely
- must have reliable attendance and promptness
- must maintain neat and clean personal hygiene
- must have positive interaction skills with students and staff
Job Qualifications
- High School Diploma or accredited equivalency
- strong knowledge of safety and sanitation related to food service operations
- a minimum of two years experience in school food service
- food preparation background and supervisory experience are desirable
- completion of Food Service Basics, Sanitation and Safety and Communications classes through the State-Wide Training Program offered by the Michigan School Food Service Association and the Michigan Department of Education within two years
- certified as the Person in Charge in accordance with health department codes
- ability to work under pressure and tolerate standing, bending, squatting, reaching and lifting with or without ADA accommodation
- sufficient mobility to perform assigned tasks within production and service time frames
- reliable attendance and promptness
- neat and clean appearance with high personal hygiene standards
- ability to interact positively with students, co-workers, teachers and administrators, and to resolve problems
Job Duties
- Implements a standardized menu by preparing food and supply orders in the proper quantities
- adheres to sanitation and safety practices which comply with State, County, and District requirements and codes
- assists with planning schedules and work assignments as well as training, cross training and supervising the assistant servers
- ensures compliance of the National School Lunch, Breakfast and After School Snack Programs by adhering to all USDA, Michigan Department of Education, District and health department rules and regulations
- communicates to the Director of Food Services concerns regarding policies and/or procedures as well as any personnel matters
- promotes student and staff satisfaction through merchandising meals in an attractive manner and addressing customer complaints and suggestions
- completes meal preparation of the various components and ala carte items for service during the breakfast and lunch periods
- collects money from students, prepares bank deposits, maintains student account balances and communicates with parents, the Principal and the Director of Food Services regarding monies owed
- ensures proper presentation, portion control and maintenance/documentation of holding and serving temperatures
- adheres to prescribed safety procedures including checking and removing safety hazards, administering emergency first aid and completing accident reports
- completes required Food Service Department reports and forms in a timely manner
- performs other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Building Principal and/or the Director of Food Services
