The Food Service Shift Lead position at University Hospital represents a frontline supervisory role crucial for the daily management and operational success of food service areas. Under the supervision of the Nutrition Services Assistant/Associate Director, the Shift Lead is responsible for coordinating and directing food service activities in assigned areas such as BistrOH! Cafes, Hospitality Centers, and the East kitchen. This role ensures that service is delivered in a timely manner while maintaining high quality and safety standards consistent with the Medical Center’s mission.

In addition to overseeing food preparation and sales staffing, this position serves as a key operational coordinator who manages labor distribution effectively throughout shifts, ensuring maximum efficiency and integration across departments. The Shift Lead initiates partnerships with other hospital departments, enforces sanitation and quality plans, requisitions food products, and assists in the development and management of relevant policies and procedures. Leadership in training service staff on patient care standards and retail service excellence is a significant responsibility, requiring the ability to motivate and guide teams effectively.

Candidates for this role should have appropriate training and experience as outlined by state classified civil service specifications, including hands-on skills in kitchen operations, food preparation, supervision, and management of food service activities. Experience in budgeting and bookkeeping as well as previous supervisory or management roles in food service environments is highly valued. This position offers a full-time, regular employment schedule with varying shifts to meet the operational needs of the Medical Center.

Job Requirements

  • Have 600 hours training or 6 months experience in kitchen equipment operation
  • Have 600 hours training or 6 months experience in food preparation
  • Completed 6 courses or 6 months experience in supervision
  • Completed 6 courses or 6 months experience in food management
  • Completed 1 course or 1 month experience in budgeting
  • Completed 1 course or 1 month experience in bookkeeping
  • Available to work varying shifts
  • Successfully pass background check
  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the role

Job Qualifications

  • Completion of 600 hours training in operation of kitchen equipment or 6 months experience
  • Completion of 600 hours training in food preparation or 6 months experience
  • Completion of 6 courses in supervision or 6 months experience
  • Completion of 6 courses in food management or 6 months experience
  • Completion of 1 course in budgeting or 1 month experience
  • Completion of 1 course in bookkeeping or 1 month experience
  • Preferred 1-3 years of food service management experience
  • Ability to lead and supervise a team effectively
  • Strong organizational and communication skills

Job Duties

  • Coordinate and direct daily food service operations in assigned areas
  • Supervise, train, and participate in activities of nutrition aides, sales assistants, and kitchen personnel
