Michigan Medicine is currently seeking a dedicated Food Service Operations Supervisor to join its Patient Food Service Department. This full-time, exempt position based at the UM Hospital in Ann Arbor involves overseeing daily operations within the hospital kitchen. The role requires supervising multiple teams responsible for meal preparation, tray assembly, kitchen cleaning, stockkeeping, and delivery services such as Meals on Wheels. The supervisor ensures that all food services are executed efficiently in compliance with high standards of food safety, sanitation, and quality. This leadership position plays a critical role in maintaining operational excellence while fostering teamwork, promoting staff wellbeing, and upholding inclusivity in the workplace.

The Food Service Operations Supervisor is responsible for guiding and supporting foodservice employees to achieve operational goals through effective communication and collaboration. The supervisor also plays an active role in recruitment, training, development, and performance management of staff to ensure continuous improvement and adherence to hospital policies and regulatory requirements. This role requires applying disciplinary actions when necessary to maintain a professional and safe work environment.

Working a 40-hour week from Sunday through Thursday, 6:30 am to 3:00 pm, the position offers a meaningful opportunity to contribute to a dynamic healthcare environment. Job Requirements

  • One year of supervisory experience
  • Experience working in a food service operation
  • ServSafe Manager certification within the last 5 years or receipt of certification within 90 days of hire

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in hospitality management, business administration, nutrition, culinary arts, or a related field
  • Knowledge of CBORD Food Service Management System
  • Experience supervising bargained-for staff
  • Two years of supervisory experience in a high-volume, complex food service operation with at least 1-2 years of experience in an institutional or high-volume restaurant or foodservice operation including experience with performance management, promoting teamwork, and motivating staff

Job Duties

  • Supervise and direct foodservice employees to achieve defined operational goals
  • Maintain effective communication methods such as bulletin boards and newsletters to keep staff informed
  • Promote teamwork, wellbeing, and inclusion within the hospital kitchen
  • Perform duties equivalent to subordinate employees to support the team function as needed
  • Assist in the recruitment, selection, training, and development of staff in collaboration with Food Service Managers
  • Ensure employees are trained and held accountable for adhering to health system, department, and regulatory standards
  • Conduct regular performance appraisals and offer development opportunities for employees
  • Apply disciplinary action including termination when necessary to enforce guidelines and policies consistently
