Job Description
Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) is a large and diverse urban school district committed to providing quality education and services to its students and community. Dedicated to fostering an inclusive and nurturing environment, MPS not only focuses on academic excellence but also prioritizes the well-being and health of its students through comprehensive programs, including nutrition and food services. The district serves thousands of students across multiple schools, operating numerous cafeterias and food service centers to ensure students receive nutritious meals daily. With an emphasis on diversity, equity, and opportunity, MPS is committed to hiring qualified individuals who will support its mission of enabling all students to succeed both inside and outside the classroom.
The Food Service Manager Trainee position at Milwaukee Public Schools is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in starting or advancing a career within the food service industry, specifically within an educational setting. This role is designed as an on-the-job training position where the trainee works closely with experienced food service managers to learn the specific responsibilities and skills required to effectively run a school kitchen. This position focuses on the daily operations of the school kitchen, ensuring high-quality, nutritious food preparation and service adhering to all local, state, and federal regulations. The trainee will gradually assume responsibility for the kitchen operations and may be required to fill in for absent managers on both short and long-term bases.
Importantly, this role does not involve working nights, weekends, or holidays, making it suitable for individuals seeking a more structured and predictable schedule. The position also requires some travel between different school locations within the district, offering a dynamic work environment. The salary range for this role is competitive, starting from $18.83 to $24.91 per hour, reflecting the trainee’s progression and increasing responsibility over time.
The Food Service Manager Trainee will gain hands-on experience by engaging in various essential duties, from supervising food preparation and service to ensuring compliance with nutrition and safety standards. In addition, the trainee will learn how to manage inventory, process requisitions, maintain cleanliness, and train food service assistants. This comprehensive training program supports career growth within the food service department and prepares trainees for positions with greater responsibility within the school district or similar organizations.
Furthermore, working with Milwaukee Public Schools means being part of an organization that values its employees' development and growth. The district supports continuing education and professional development, including required certifications such as ServSafe. Employees benefit from a structured onboarding process, a supportive work culture, and opportunities to contribute to the community’s health and success.
This job opportunity is open for applications through July 19, 2026, and requires candidates to submit a current resume and demonstrate relevant work experience. Selected applicants will be invited to complete an online interview and must undergo background checks and credential verification prior to appointment. This position also encourages applicants who are military veterans or spouses of veterans to apply and submit necessary documentation for veteran preference. Milwaukee Public Schools is an equal opportunity employer that values diversity and is committed to providing reasonable accommodations as needed.
