The Food Service Manager position at Hampton City Schools is a full-time role with a 10-month employment period, offering an hourly wage range of $17.78 to $23.89. Reporting directly to Ms. Edwina Forrest, Director of Food and Nutrition Services, the Food Service Manager is responsible for overseeing the management of the Child Nutrition Program at the school level. This role demands a strong commitment to ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations while maintaining the highest standards of food safety and quality. The manager is expected to lead food service staff with courtesy and professionalism, foster a welcoming and hygienic meal service environment, and actively participate in food preparation and service duties.
The Food Service Manager is tasked with maintaining accurate paperwork, including inventories, food production records, and financial documentation, ensuring the school’s meal program operates efficiently within budgetary constraints. The role requires monitoring all aspects of food flow from ordering to service, adhering strictly to HACCP procedures and health regulations. Additionally, the manager is responsible for planning work schedules, providing training and leadership to food service employees, and conducting nutrition education promotions to enhance participation and foster healthy eating habits among students.
The position requires proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel and the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders including staff, students, and school administration. Job Requirements
- Associates degree or equivalent educational experience, with academic major in food service management, dietetics, family and consumer sciences, nutrition education, culinary arts, business, or a related field
- Requires two - three years experience in the food service industry
- Two to three years experience as a food service manager or supervisor preferred
- ServSafe Certification required

Job Duties
- Maintains integrity and accountability of the Child Nutrition Program through compliance with all federal, state and local regulations at individual's school
- Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with food service staff, students, school administrators, teachers, and school community
- Maintains accurate paperwork and inventories, food production records, food orders, and financial records
- Ensure that appropriate quantities of food and supplies are available through orders and inventories
- Participates in preparation, cooking and service of meals
- Ensure appropriate quantities of food are prepared and served daily
- Insures that safety and health standards in the school kitchen are in compliance with local, state and federal standards
- Inspects and monitors the flow of food through the operation from ordering to service in accordance with all HACCP procedures, regulations from the Virginia Department of Health and Sanitation, and procedures from HCS Food & Nutrition Services
- Plans and implements work schedules and assignments
- Provides leadership to insure school meals are served in a pleasant facility by courteous staff
- Plans and implements nutrition education promotions to increase meal participation and educate students about healthy habits
- Responsible for meeting budgetary goals of school site
- Provides a safe environment conducive to protecting the health and well-being of all staff and students
- Conducts school staff meeting and trainings for school's food service employees
- Maintains a clean and organize food service operation at all times
- Attends all required meetings, workshops and completes on-line trainings
- Operates computer using basic Microsoft Office (WORD, EXCEL) and including email
- Represents school and department in school events as needed
- All other duties as assigned
