Job Description
The Department of Health Services (DHS) at the Mendota Mental Health Institute (MMHI) is currently recruiting for a Food Service Manager. MMHI is an inpatient psychiatric facility located on the north side of Madison, Wisconsin. It operates within the Wisconsin mental health service delivery system and is committed to providing specialized services in treatment, research, training, and consultation. The institute offers a beautiful campus environment with convenient free parking and an onsite workout facility. MMHI is part of the Division of Care and Treatment Services (DCTS), which is dedicated to helping all Wisconsin residents live their best lives by providing an interconnected web of behavioral health services.
As an employee of the State of Wisconsin, you'll gain access to a comprehensive benefits package including ample vacation time, paid holidays, competitive health insurance options, a pension plan with significant employer contributions, multiple flexible spending accounts, a wellness program, and employee assistance resources. This position offers a starting pay range between $30.46 and $34.00 per hour, corresponding to approximately $63,300 to $70,700 annually, depending on qualifications. A 12-month probationary period is required, and pay for current or former state employees is based on applicable compensation rules.
The Food Service Manager plays a pivotal role in managing the Food and Nutrition Services Department at MMHI. The primary shift for this position is from 6:00 am to 2:30 pm, serving as the main early relief manager covering a 5:00 am to 1:30 pm shift when that manager is absent. On occasion, the Food Service Manager may fill in for the 10:15 am to 6:45 pm shift, and the role includes working one early weekend shift monthly (5:00 am to 1:00 pm) and one late weekend shift monthly (10:45 am to 6:45 pm). This manager is responsible for coordinating daily food service operations, providing leadership and supervisory support while ensuring high sanitation, safety, and housekeeping standards within the department.
The role demands oversight of both production and service functions, maintaining quality control, stock management, and collaboration with other departments to assure smooth operations. This position requires someone who excels in managing high-volume food service environments, with a solid understanding of food safety, labor management, and customer service. Candidates will need to demonstrate strong organizational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead teams effectively in a healthcare setting.
Additionally, physical requirements for this job include lifting up to 50 pounds and other physical activities such as twisting, bending, crawling, crouching, and climbing ladders. A valid driver’s license and meeting State of Wisconsin vehicle policy requirements are necessary for driving state vehicles for official duties. Background checks and TB testing are mandatory prior to employment start. The state does not sponsor work visas for this position, and applicants must verify eligibility to work in the United States.
