Job Description

The Y, a renowned nonprofit organization dedicated to youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, is seeking a dedicated Food Service Manager to join our team. The Y has a strong commitment to strengthening communities by providing safe, welcoming, and nurturing environments where individuals can thrive. With a rich tradition of inclusiveness and genuine care, the Y fosters a culture where every staff member is valued and empowered to make a meaningful impact. As a large community-focused institution, the Y ensures a safe place for children, teens, and vulnerable populations by maintaining rigorous safety and child protection standards. We embrace diversity and encourage staff to be hopeful, genuine, and determined in their mission to offer the best services possible.

The Food Service Manager position at the Y is a crucial role responsible for preparing nutritious and appealing meals for students and members while maintaining strict compliance with health department regulations. This full-time, non-exempt role operates Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, offering a competitive pay rate of $24.00 per hour. The role comes with generous paid time off, access to YMCA facilities, and comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, disability, life, vision, and pet insurance. Additionally, employees have the opportunity to participate in a 403b Retirement Savings Plan with an employer match once fully vested, along with contributions to a retirement account (403a).

In this position, the Food Service Manager works under the supervision of the Executive Director and is responsible for adhering to federal guidelines such as the Child Nutrition Program, Summer Food Serving Program, and the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). A key focus includes maintaining a clean and sanitary kitchen environment by following all safety and sanitary food handling rules and regulations. The Food Service Manager will inventory supplies, verify the accuracy of deliveries, and rotate stock to ensure freshness and compliance with health standards.

Further responsibilities involve helping to implement menu plans that meet daily nutritional requirements, monitoring food flavor, appearance, and temperature, while being attentive to students’ allergies and dietary restrictions. Record keeping is another critical part of the role, requiring accurate meal counts, production records, and regular temperature checks of refrigerators and freezers to comply with CACFP standards. The role also involves reporting any safety hazards or concerns promptly and maintaining knowledge of all YMCA policies and procedures.

Ideal candidates will have a high school diploma or GED along with at least two years of related experience or training, preferably with a background in school food service or working with students. ServSafe Certification and Allergen Awareness training are strongly preferred or must be obtained within 30 days of hire. The role requires excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work independently under minimal supervision, effective problem-solving skills, and the capability to maintain composure in stressful situations. Communication skills in English, both written and oral, are essential, along with basic mathematical skills and proficiency with common computer software such as MS Word, Excel, and Outlook.

The Food Service Manager at the Y is expected to represent the program professionally and positively interact with parents, students, staff, volunteers, and the broader community. Continuous training and in-service meetings are part of the professional development supported by the Y to keep skills and certifications current. This position offers a chance to be part of a passionate team dedicated to fostering a safe, healthy, and supportive environment in which youth and families can flourish.
