Job Description

Columbus City Schools (CCS) is a prominent public school district located in Columbus, Ohio, recognized for its commitment to providing high-quality education and support services to its diverse student population. As an equal opportunity employer, CCS encourages applicants from a variety of backgrounds and ensures a nondiscriminatory hiring process that values diversity and inclusion. The district is dedicated not only to academic excellence but also to fostering an environment where every staff member is empowered to contribute meaningfully to student success and community well-being. CCS maintains a robust Food Services department focused on delivering nutritious and safe meals to its students, aligning with national and state food safety standards and promoting healthy eating habits across its schools.

The Food Service Manager role at Columbus City Schools is a full-time, hourly position based in Columbus, Ohio, offering a starting wage of $22.01 per hour. This role is essential for managing the day-to-day operations of a full-service kitchen within a school cafeteria or the central Food Service Production Center, ensuring that meals meet quality, safety, and nutritional standards. Candidates interested in this position are required to participate in a competitive and web-based examination process that evaluates knowledge of food service management, food safety, order processing, inventory control, and proficiency with Microsoft Office software, among other relevant skills. The successful applicants after testing are added to an eligible list for future job openings, highlighting the ongoing need for skilled food service managers in the district.

The Food Service Manager operates under direct supervision but exercises considerable autonomy in the responsibilities of planning menus, supervising cooks and food service helpers, and managing inventory and supplies. The role requires attention to detail in maintaining records for cafeteria receipts, federal meal reimbursements, and ensuring compliance with food protection regulations and safety protocols. This position plays a vital role in liaising with school principals to coordinate cafeteria operations and addresses any concerns raised by students, parents, or staff.

In addition to managing personnel, including student assistants, the Food Service Manager is responsible for performance appraisals and enforcing workplace discipline when necessary. The role demands strong leadership skills and the ability to train staff in quantity cooking techniques and equipment usage, ensuring consistent food quality and safety. The manager also oversees financial controls related to cash handling and meal payment systems, maintaining accountability for all transactions.

Candidates must possess a minimum of one year of experience as a cook within Columbus City Schools or equivalent experience in a similar setting. Additionally, applicants need a valid Level II State of Ohio Food Protection Certification and possibly a motor vehicle operator's license, depending on the specific position. This role requires not only culinary and management expertise but also proficiency in mathematics to manage storeroom records and prepare various operational reports.

The competitive examination consists of multiple choice and simulation tests designed to assess candidates' knowledge and skills relevant to the position. CCS provides accommodations for applicants who require special assistance during testing, underlining its commitment to accessibility and equal opportunity. The exam is web-based and scheduled once applications are approved, with notifications sent via email. Candidates must present a valid picture ID to participate in the examination.

The Food Service Manager position is an invaluable role within the Columbus City Schools system, contributing directly to the nutritional well-being of students and the effective functioning of school food services. This role combines leadership, culinary expertise, administrative oversight, and adherence to health regulations to create a safe and productive food service environment in the schools. Those joining CCS in this capacity will become part of an important community-oriented mission, supported by a comprehensive testing and hiring process that values competence and fairness.
