Job Description

San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD) is a prominent public school district located in San Antonio, Texas. The Food Service Manager position within SAISD plays a crucial role in managing the food service operations at a campus level. This role is 185 days per year and is classified under the Non-Exempt N07 pay grade, with an entry hourly pay rate of $18.50 which may increase depending on directly related experience. Reporting to the Child Nutrition Supervisor, the Food Service Manager is responsible for overseeing all aspects of meal programs, including breakfast, lunch, afterschool meals, snacks, family style meals, satellite meals, special diets, the fresh fruit and vegetable program, and early head start meals. In this capacity, the manager ensures that food preparation and service comply with policies, procedures, health codes, and regulations of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Texas Public School Nutrition Policy.

Key responsibilities of this role involve staff training and supervision, maintaining accurate production, serving and financial records, and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and sanitation standards. The Food Service Manager also coordinates with campus principals, supervisors, and the Food and Child Nutrition Services department to resolve personnel issues, schedule changes, and special serving requirements. This position requires strong leadership and organizational skills, effective communication abilities, and proficiency in computer, bookkeeping, and recordkeeping tasks related to cafeteria management.

The position demands familiarity with high-volume food service operations including methods, materials, equipment, and appliances commonly used in such environments. The manager is also responsible for maintaining equipment and ensuring timely repairs and replacements when necessary. Work conditions include exposure to temperature extremes, humidity, biological hazards, and routine physical demands such as lifting, standing, and repetitive motions. The Food Service Manager must maintain emotional control under stress and work efficiently despite frequent interruptions and deadlines.

Candidates must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent, completion of SAISD’s Food Service Manager Internship Program or equivalent experience, as well as Texas Department of State Health Services Certified Food Manager Certification. Additionally, a satisfactory background check is required. The position entails supervising cafeteria workers, managing cash reporting, and handling security protocols such as the use of keys and codes. Job Requirements

  • Successful completion of SAISD’s Food Service Manager Internship Program or minimum 2 years food service management experience in a school district participating in the National School Lunch Program or minimum 1 year as a Food Service Assistant Manager within SAISD

  • Satisfactory fingerprinting background check with a non-refundable fee paid by employee

Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Produce and maintain work and serving schedules and production documents daily
  • Serve all food items according to USDA menu specifications following district policies and procedures
  • Coordinate with campus principal, supervisor, and Food and Child Nutrition Services to resolve personnel issues, schedule changes, and special serving requirements
  • Supervise and evaluate cafeteria workers and provide employment recommendations
  • Ensure food is safely produced and of high quality and stored in a hazard-free environment
  • Maintain accurate reports of financial, production, and activity records daily and monthly
  • Maintain a safe work environment by enforcing cleanliness, health, safety and sanitation standards
  • Ensure appropriate quantities of food and supplies are available through daily orders and periodic inventories
  • Maintain equipment maintenance logs and perform preventive maintenance
  • Report needed equipment repairs and recommend equipment replacement
  • Comply with all state, district, and federal policies including attendance, punctuality, and confidentiality
  • Compile, maintain and file all required reports, records, and documents
  • Perform other related duties as assigned within skill and experience capabilities
